Description

The “Yolande d'Aragon”' (“Iolande”) rose was created in France in 1843; many consider it the most beautiful creation of Jean-Pierre Vibert.

This delicate representative of the historical rose forms a beautiful shrub, which can be trained also as a climber. It is adorned with large, very full, cup-shaped, quartered, pinkish-purple flowers in clusters that later reveal lighter outer petals and have an intense, delightful fragrance. Beautiful, healthy foliage of a rich, pleasant green color. Has excellent health and abundant flowering with very large, full flowers with petals that twist in a whirlwind, bright pink on the inner petals, fading to a smoky blue-pink on the outer ones.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

The bud is amaranth-red, round, rimmed with long sepals. The flowers are large (8 - 10 cm), full (26-40 petals), initially spherical, later cup-shaped, tightly filled with petals; at full bloom, they are flat, rosette-like, divided into quarters with dense pink petals that tend to become purplish in the center. The overall color of the flowers is bright lilac-pink with a rich carmine-purple center and lilac outer petals. They appear in small clusters of 1 - 3 and have an intense, pleasant fragrance with subtle citrus notes. They attract attention with their bright pink color, which becomes purple as they bloom. It blooms profusely at the end of spring – beginning of summer, then it repeats flowering with scattered, solitary flowers throughout the season until the first autumn frosts, best if the spent flowers are removed. It does not set hips.

Rose “Yolande d'Aragon” forms branchy, hardy, dense, upright, and vigorous plant - it can reach a height of 150 - 200 cm (4' 11" - 6' 7"), and a width 100 - 150 cm of (3’ 9" - 4' 11"). The shoots are strong and upright, reaching 1.2 - 1.5 meters or more, with a small number of large, sturdy thorns and numerous small prickles. The leaves are medium-sized, matte, abundant, tender green or light green, 5-foliolate with elongated oval, narrowed, coarsely toothed leaflets with strong veins and a slightly leathery underside. When young, the underside of the leaflets is slightly brownish-marbled, and the leaves have a narrow brown margin.

This is a rose that holds very well in a bouquet and captivates with its color and fragrance.

Prune the dry stems and regularly remove faded flowers and lightly trim the plant in summer to achieve a good second bloom in autumn.

Disease resistance: very resistant to diseases.

Good frost resistance – USDA Zones 4b to 9b.

This rose in different sources is described as a Gallica, Portland, or Hybrid Perpetual. Genetic research shows that it is closer to Gallica than to Portland roses. The pale green foliage indicates a clear kinship with Rosa chinensis, but it also demonstrates features of Rosa gallica; however, some classify it as a Portland rose

Whatever its origin is, "Yolande d'Aragon" is a wonderful rose! From a cluster of dark pink buds, dressed in feathery sepals, large cup-shaped flower clusters of dark pink flowers with a pale back open, filled with petals in the form of a little rose. They have an intoxicatingly strong aroma of Old roses. It is considered one of the best and most fragrant among old roses – a charm of another time that conquers the heart!

Name origin

This is a repeat flowering rose hybrid dedicated to Duchess Yolande d'Aragon, who was born in Zaragoza around 1380 and died in France in 1442, the wife of Louis II of Anjou.

It is named in honor of Yolande of Anjou, a native of Aragon, the wife of King Louis II of Anjou and Sicily, thereby celebrating the beauty of Anjou, as she was called "the most beautiful princess of the Christian world". Yolande d'Aragon was born in Zaragoza, Aragon, in 1379. She was a strong supporter of Joan of Arc and played an important role in the politics of France and Aragon.
