Description

‘Wise Portia’ is a small yet captivating English Rose, cherished for its richly toned, purple-mauve flowers, deeply cupped form, and intensely nostalgic Old Rose fragrance. Though modest in size and temperament, it rewards patient gardeners with blooms of remarkable charm, evoking the mystique of historic Gallica roses in a modern, compact shrub form. Though surpassed in vigour and disease resistance by more modern cultivars, ‘Wise Portia’ remains a connoisseur’s rose - an heirloom-worthy treasure that evokes the mood of Malmaison and the romance of ancient rose gardens.

FLOWERING

This rose variety ‘Wise Portia’ has a recurrent flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with breaks from summer until frosts, especially when regularly deadheaded. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.

The flowers of ‘Wise Portia’ are its greatest allure. They are medium to large sized, approximately 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter when fully open. They begin as elegant, pointed cherry buds, gradually unfolding into shallowly cupped or loosely reflexed rosettes with distinctive scalloped edges. The colour of the flowers varies greatly with weather and season: cool conditions coax out deep, velvety shades of magenta, carmine, and royal purple, while warmer climates yield softer hues of lilac, mauve, and pink-crimson, often with a silvery patina on petal undersides. Occasional displays of darkened stamens in aged blooms lend an anemone-like charm to the flowers.

Flowering is reliable and repeat-flowering throughout the season. Blooms are often borne in small clusters, with individual flowers long-lasting and particularly suitable for cutting - filling rooms with their strong, sweet Old Rose scent, often touched with hints of spice and myrrh. In cooler climates, colour saturation is richer and fragrance more pronounced.

While the flowers are sometimes too heavy for the thin stems, especially after rain, they remain shapely and consistently pleasing in form. Regular deadheading helps maintain bloom production, although a few hips may form if left late in the season.

PLANT

Rose variety ‘Wise Portia’ is classified as a Shrub rose and is part of David Austin’s English Shrub Roses collection. ‘Wise Portia’ forms a compact shrub, generally reaching about 80 - 100 c m (2’ 6” - 3’ 3”) in height with a slightly wider spread in warm climates. It features upright, slender stems that benefit from light structural pruning to maintain balance and density. While it is not a vigorous grower compared to later David Austin introductions, the plant exhibits a consistent blooming rhythm if well fed and treated preventively for disease.

The foliage is somewhat sparse but of good quality, dark green and glossy when mature, emerging with reddish-bronze tints in spring. The surface texture of the leaflets is leathery, semi-glossy. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is small and double. Though susceptible to blackspot and mildew in damp or neglected conditions, it performs far better in hot, dry climates, where its compact frame and limited foliage are less of a drawback and more of a strength.

Stems are armed with small, pale green prickles and should be staked or grown in a protected border site where flower stems can rest naturally. It thrives with generous soil nutrition, sunlight, and consistent care, rewarding the attentive gardener with near-continuous flowering through the growing season.

Its neat size makes it suitable for containers, small borders, parterre plantings, and partial shade, where its jewel-toned blooms glow vividly against darker backgrounds.

Rose variety ‘Wise Portia’ is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY

Rose variety ‘Ausport’ / 'Wise Portia’ was bred by David Austin and marking one of the earliest entries in the English Roses collection. This rose is result of crossing the English shrub rose ’The Knight’ with another English shrub rose ’Glastonbury’, , inheriting from the former its Gallica-style colouring and strong perfume, and from the latter a charming but modest growth habit.
