Description

‘Wenlock’ is a robust and fragrant English shrub rose, notable for its vigorous growth, strong Old Rose fragrance, and rich, crimson blooms that evoke the charm of heritage Gallicas. Though less refined than newer varieties, it remains a reliable garden performer, particularly in warmer climates where it can rise to impressive heights.

FLOWERING

This rose variety ‘Wenlock’ has a recurrent flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with breaks from summer until frosts, especially when regularly deadheaded. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.

‘Wenlock’ produces large, shallowly cupped blooms measuring approximately 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter, composed of loosely packed petals that form an open, informal rosette. Buds are rounded and deep red, often opening into flowers of medium to deep crimson, which may develop cerise or cherry-pink tones as they age. Occasionally, a white streak near the centre adds further visual interest.

Blooms are typically borne singly or in small clusters of 3 to 5 blooms together, presented on short stems with sturdy sepals. While the necks can be weak - causing nodding in damp conditions - the flowers are frequently produced throughout the season and repeat well, particularly when spent blooms are promptly removed. In dry weather, the flowers exhibit their best form and colour saturation, but in rain-prone areas they may ball or spoil.

What elevates this rose is its strong and sweet Old Rose fragrance, occasionally tinged with citrus or clove notes, which adds to its sensory appeal and lends an antique aura to the garden.

PLANT

Rose variety ‘Wenlock’ is classified as a Shrub rose and is part of David Austin’s English Shrub Roses collection. ‘Wenlock’ is a vigorous and upright shrub with the flexibility to be trained as a short climber in hot climates, where it can reach from 150 cm to 300 cm (up to 10 ft) or more. In cooler regions, it remains more compact, typically around 150 cm (5 ft) tall and wide. The plant’s stems are heavily armed with abundant crimson-red prickles, lending it an unmistakably Gallica-like character. This rose forms a dense, bushy shrub, with strong upright canes that benefit from pegging or strategic pruning to control height and encourage lateral flowering shoots. In gardens with space and sun, it adds height and seasonal rhythm.

The foliage of this rose variety is large, dark green, and broadly oval, emerging in spring with bronzy red tones before maturing. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is usually 7, including the terminal leaflet. The edges of the leaflets are serrated, the type of serration is double and medium-sized. While the foliage is generally resistant to mildew, it may be somewhat susceptible to blackspot, especially in wet summers. Regular sanitation and airflow will greatly improve its appearance and resilience. Its seven-leaflet pattern and rugged texture are particularly evocative of older rose species.

‘Wenlock’ looks amazing in informal borders, mixed shrub plantings, or cottage-style gardens where its slightly untamed growth and rich bloom colour can complement paler companions. It also functions admirably as a pillar rose or wall-trained climber in hotter regions. Its robust presence and repeat bloom make it a valuable inclusion for those who appreciate richly coloured roses with strong scent and heritage form.

Rose variety ‘Wenlock’ is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.

Name origin

It was named after Much Wenlock, a historic medieval town near Austin’s nursery in Shropshire, England. The name also alludes to Wenlock Edge, a limestone escarpment immortalized in A.E. Housman’s poetry, evoking English pastoral beauty and heritage.
