Description
‘Warwick Castle’ enchants with luminous carmine-pink blooms formed in old-fashioned rosettes, accompanied by a warm, strong fragrance. Its wide-arching growth and continuous flowering make it an excellent choice for borders or mixed borders, especially in sunny, dry climates where its full charm can unfurl.
FLOWERING
This rose variety ‘Warwick Castle’ has a recurrent flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with breaks from summer until frosts, especially when regularly deadheaded. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.
The flowers of ‘Warwick Castle’ are deeply rooted in the Old Rose tradition, shaped as flat, many-petalled rosettes that measure up to 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter. The flower buds are rounded and richly carmine, adorned with distinctive large sepals, and open to flowers in a glowing, warm rose-pink colour. The blooms start as cupped and later open to a flat rosette shape, with a classic button eye at the centre, reminiscent of its Gallica and Portland heritage.
Each bloom has a multitude of small, neatly arranged petals, creating a formal but soft presentation. They are typically borne in small, generous clusters of about 3 to 7 flowers at the end of the slender stems. In dry, warm regions, the shape of the flowers is exceptionally well formed, balanced, and symmetrical. However, in cooler, damper regions, blooms may ball in wet conditions, a flaw often inherited from its Old Rose lineage.
The fragrance is strong, sweet, and slightly fruity, rising pleasantly from the flowers. It combines with the flower’s texture and colour to evoke a sense of Victorian refinement, perfectly in keeping with the rose’s commemorative role.
PLANT
Rose variety ‘Warwick Castle’ is classified as a Shrub rose and is part of David Austin’s English Shrub Roses collection. This rose has a low, arching growth habit with a distinctive mound-forming habit. Typically reaching 100 cm in height and spreading up to 125 cm (approx. 3.3 × 4 ft), it is well-suited for front-of-border planting, where its graceful form can spill naturally across ground or hardscaping. In warm climates, it may send out long, billowing canes that can extend even further, reaching up to 180 cm (6 ft) in length, giving it a slight ground-cover tendency.
The foliage of this rose is medium to dark green in colour, developing a bronze shaded young growth, and has a softly textured matte surface. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is usually 5, including the terminal leaflet. The edges of the leaflets are serrated, the type of serration is double and medium-sized.
‘Warwick Castle’ is ideal for the front of mixed borders, low hedging, or ground cover in Mediterranean or dry warm climates. Its arching habit allows it to flow naturally over edges, softening hard lines and complementing companion perennials. It pairs beautifully with lavender, Nepeta, Stachys, or other drought-tolerant grey-leaved plants, and can be grouped in drifts of three to five for a rich, romantic display.
Notably, this rose is susceptible to mildew, rust, and blackspot, particularly in humid or rainy conditions. The bush performs markedly better in sunny, dry gardens, where its health and flowering potential can be more fully realised. Regular preventive care, including mulching, good airflow, and fungicidal sprays, will help manage disease risk.
Rose variety ‘Warwick Castle’ is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.
Name origin
This rose was named to mark the opening of the Victorian rose garden at Warwick Castle, a recreation of the original garden designed by Robert Marnock in 1868. It is thus both a botanical and historical homage, linking modern rose breeding with Britain’s rich garden heritage.
