Rose Cottage Maid

A captivating historical rose variety, 'Village Maid', also registered as 'Centifolia Variegata', is a charming and fragrant heirloom rose bred by an unknown French breeder before 1817. Its variegated flowers blend creamy white petals with graceful deep pink stripes, creating a delicate and eye-catching pink palette.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

The medium-sized blooms (6-8 cm) are cupped rosette-shaped, occasionally showcasing a charming button eye at the center. Boasting 70-90 petals, these very full and elegant flowers exude a rich, intoxicating aroma. Although it flowers only once per season, it does so with an abundance that lasts for weeks. The flowers are born in small clusters of 3-5 blooms, and the plant often produces decorative rose hips after flowering.

This rose grows vigorously, forming a well-branched and upright shrub that reaches 150-180 cm in height and approximately 120 cm in width. Its foliage is medium to large, light green, and matte, with oval-shaped, serrated-edged leaflets (typically 3-5 per leaf). The stems are strong and heavily armed with prickles.

Disease and Climate Resistance:

'Village Maid' is highly resistant to diseases and exceptionally winter hardy, making it suitable for USDA Zone 4b and warmer climates.

Pruning Guidelines:

To maintain its beauty, pruning is best done after flowering or during dormancy. Minimal sanitary pruning is required—usually limited to removing very old wood post-flowering and lightly trimming back overgrowth by one-third in late winter (February).

Centifolia roses, often referred to as "Cabbage Roses" or "Provence Roses," emerged at the end of the 16th century, likely as hybrids between Autumn Damask and Alba roses. Known for their large, globular, and very full blooms in shades of white or pink, Centifolias exhibit a somewhat loose growth habit. This group also includes dwarf hybrids featuring smaller leaves and flowers, all of which share a reputation for being highly fragrant and exceptionally winter hardy.
