Description
This floribunda rose is one of the latest masterpieces from renowned French hybridizer Georges Delbard has already stolen the hearts of rose lovers globally. The flowers are very posh and charming. They display numerous pink-lilac flowers, with a darker heart and garnished with more than 100 petals. The flowers have Old Rose character and just a touch of modern times. The beauty of its flowers is complimented with strong, Tea fragrance with powerful notes of lemongrass.
FLOWERING
The variety has recurrent, repeating flowering habit. Blooms in flushes starting from early summer and continues until the frosts.
Flower bud:
The flower buds are large, have rounded shape. When sepals first start to divide, bud color is deep purple or deep pink. When the bud is half open the bud color is dark lilac pink with light oink closer to the base. They are borne in small clusters with 3, 5 to 7 blooms together, having irregular shape, or singly.
Sepals have medium green colour with dark purple red intonations on the lower surface, the surface texture is smooth. The colour of the upper surface is medium green and the surface is moderately pubescent. There are 3 sepals with large extensions and 2 unappendaged sepals.
Bloom:
The flowers of ‘Thierry Marx’ are large, the average open size of the flowers is about 10-12 cm (4 – 4/5 inches). The flowers are very full, the number of petals is over 100.
When the flower first opens, it has a cupped flower form, which becomes flatter as flower fully opens, having rosette form in the center, the outer petals curl back. The flower form retains until the end.
The upper sides of the petals are of a deep mauve or lilac-pink colour which transitions to a much darker shade closer to the edges and transitions to much lighter closer to the base. The reverse sides of the petals mainly are of the same mauve or lilac-pink colour, transitions in a smaller portion to a darker shade closer to the edges and transitions from a middle part of the petals to much lighter almost white shades of mauve of lilac-pink.
The general tonality of the flower at the end of the first day is mauve or pink-lilac with a darker center. At the end of the third day is slightly mauve or pink-lilac with a darker center. As the flower ages further the colours lighten. The colour of the flowers tends to have much darker shades in colder weather and much lighter, almost pink, in warmer weather conditions.
Fragrance:
The fragrance of ‘Thierry Marx’ is strong, has fresh Tea character with powerful notes of lemongrass.
PLANT
The rose variety ‘Thierry Marx’ has vigorous and strong growth habit. Forms upright, compact, slightly outwardly plant. The mature and well-established plant has a height of about 80 – 100 cm and the width of about 50 – 60 cm.
Foliage:
The foliage of the variety is very dense and healthy. There are 5 leaflets normally present on a normal mid stem leaves are 5. The leaves are large, have glossy and leathery surface texture, the edges are serrated, type of serration – single. The colour of the young foliage is medium brown green with medium purple red on the edges. The mature leaves have dark green colour.
Stems:
The stems are strong, erect and thick. The young stems have medium green colour with some medium purple red intonations, the bark is smooth. The old stems have medium brown green colour, the bark is smooth with some rough patches.
Prickles:
There is normal quantity of prickles on the main canes and few on the laterals from main canes. They are medium sized and hooked downward. Young prickles are of a purple red colour and the mature prickles are medium brown green.
Small prickles:
Small prickles are not observed on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes.
Disease resistance:
The variety ‘Thierry Marx’ has very good resistance to black spot, mildew and rust. The resistance to botrytis is good. Thin and delicate petals texture makes the flowers vulnerable to severe damage by thrips.
The variety proved to be winter hardy in USDA zones 6 and warmer. In more colder climates requires winter protection.
Name origin
This rose pays tribute to Thierry Marx, a great chef. Was selected by himself as the pink-lilac color with a darker heart of this rose reminded him of Japan, the country and culture with which he fell in love.
