Description
‘The Herbalist’ retains the visual charm and old-world simplicity of its ancestor while adding the modern benefit of repeat flowering - a rare trait among Gallica-like roses. With its compact size, dense habit, and profusion of cherry-crimson blooms, this is a rose that thrives quietly in mixed borders, cottage gardens, or low hedges, where its steady rhythm of flowering and bright autumn hips provide season-long beauty. While it may lack the showiness of modern exhibition roses, its timeless appeal, historic inspiration, and generous blooming habit give it an enduring place in any garden with soul.
FLOWERING
The blooms of ‘The Herbalist’ are medium sized and semi-double, measuring around 7 - 8 cm (2.8 - 3 inches) in diameter, with a relaxed, flat, open form. Flowers are composed of 10 - 15 loosely arranged, ruffled petals, slightly incurved and irregular in shape, giving the rose a charming, informal appearance.
The colour of ‘The Herbalist’ is rich and shifting: buds emerge deep crimson-red, opening to light cherry or deep rose pink, often with rose-pink reverse and lighter tones at the edge. At the center of each bloom is a large, eye-catching boss of golden stamens and red-gold stigmas, reminiscent of wild roses and adding strong visual contrast.
The flowers appear in small clusters of 3 - 7 flowers which are held on upright, twiggy stems, and repeat blooms occur almost continuously throughout the summer and into autumn, especially with regular deadheading.
The fragrance of ‘The Herbalist’ is light, Old rose, significantly lighter compared to Apothecary’s Rose, but it repeats flowering very well and is able to provide the display of its flowers all season long.
PLANT
Rose variety ‘The Herbalist’ is classified as a Shrub rose and is part of David Austin’s English Shrub Roses collection. Compact, healthy, and bushy, this rose forms a dense shrub with a naturally rounded silhouette. In most climates it reaches around 90 - 125 cm (3 - 4.1 feet) tall and 90 - 100 сm (3 - 3.3 feet) wide. Its dark green foliage is slightly leathery with a matte finish, and new growth often emerges bronze-tinted. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is typically 5, including the terminal leaflet.
The canes are slender and upright, moderately armed with numerous red-tipped prickles, and the plant displays a strong branching structure, making it particularly useful as a low hedge or structural element in perennial borders. It holds its shape well, especially in hot climates, where many other English Roses tend to sprawl.
Though its fragrance is light, it compensates with longevity of bloom, attractive hips, and the versatility to be used in formal plantings or naturalistic schemes. Deadheading prolongs blooming, but leaving late-season flowers will reward the gardener with bright scarlet hips in autumn, extending interest well into winter.
A rose of quiet beauty, ‘The Herbalist’ is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, historic-themed plantings, or as a low hedge along pathways and garden divisions. Its modest stature, constant bloom, and vintage styling make it especially valuable in smaller gardens or grouped in clusters for heightened impact. It is also suitable for containers, particularly in courtyard settings, and adds texture and structure when combined with herbs, lavender, or traditional perennials.
‘The Herbalist’ is a low-maintenance, reliable garden shrub, suited to a wide range of conditions. It performs well in climates similar to USDA Zones 6 - 9, showing good resistance to disease, particularly in hot, dry climates, where it retains a compact form. Some powdery mildew may appear in humid conditions, but generally it is a robust and forgiving plant.
Name origin
‘The Herbalist’ is David Austin’s homage to the legendary Apothecary’s Rose (Rosa gallica var. officinalis), a variety used for centuries in medieval monastic gardens and herbal medicine. Plants given the Latin title ‘officinalis’ were used for herbal medicines by doctors and pharmacists.
