Description

A fairy tale floribunda rose with beautiful, freely positioned nostalgic flowers of dark red colour, gathered in small clusters. Her flowers, despite being thin and silky, showed excellent hardiness to unfavorable weather conditions. Moreover, when the flower fades, they fall off cleanly from the plant so there is no need for deadheading. Forms very compact, bushy, slightly spreading plant with attractive medium green glossy leaves. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW VARIETY
The following is a description of ‘KORcasima’, as observed in its growth in August, 2008 in a nursery in Jackson County, Oreg. on plants of three years of age. Color references are made using The Royal Horticultural Society (London, England) Colour Chart, 2015 except where common terms of color are used.

FLOWER
This variety has excellent repeating flowering in flushes throughout the season, starting from late spring or early summer, and until the frosts. Self-cleaning variety, deadheading almost not required, only occasional.

Flower bud:
The flowers buds are medium sized, upon opening they have a length of about 20 mm from base of receptacle to end of bud and 18 mm in diameter at its widest point. Bud form is short and globular.

As sepals first unfold, the bud color is dark purple red (Group 53A). When ¼ open, the upper surface of petals and the lower surface of petals is dark purple red (Group 53A).

Sepals are average sized, with an average length of about 18 mm and the width is about 7 mm. Sepals shape is generally subulate, the sepal apex is generally cirrose. There are weak foliaceous appendages on three of the five sepals and the total number of the sepals is 5. Their base is flat at union with receptacle. The margins of the sepals with few stipitate glands on outer surface. Their surface texture on the inner side is covered in fine white hairs; the outer surface is smooth. The colour of the upper surface is medium green (Group 144A) and light green (Group 144B); the lower surface is medium green (Group 144A).

Receptacle has smooth surface and pear-shaped, the length is about 6 mm and the width is about 6 mm. Their colour is light green (Group 145A). Peduncle’s surface has stipitate glands; their length is 25–28 mm on average and the diameter is about 1.0 –1.5 mm, and is quite strong. The colour is light green (Group 145A).

The flower buds are borne together in small clusters, 3–9 buds per flowering stem.

There is also present dark brown purple (Group 178A) anthocyanin.

Bloom:
The flower have medium to large size, when open, the average diameter of the flower is 6.5 – 7.5 cm and the average flower height is about 3.5 cm.

Fully opened flowers express quartered rosette flower form. Upon opening, the upper part of the flower when viewed from the side has flattened convex shape; upon opening, the lower part flower when viewed from the side has concave shape. Open flower of the upper part have flattened convex shape and the lower part has concave shape when viewed from the side.

Upon opening the outermost petals have dark red colour (Group 53B) on the upper side and the inner side is dark purple red (Group 53A). The innermost petals are dark red (Group 53B) on the outside and the inner side of the petals is dark purple red (Group 53A).

Upon opening, the basal petal spots on the outermost petals are light yellow green (Group 1C) on the outer and inner sides. The basal petal spot of the innermost petals is light yellow (Group 1D) on the outer and the inner side.

After the opening of the flower the outermost petals have dark red (Group 53B) colour on the outer side and dark purple red colour (Group 46A) on the inner side. The innermost petals on the outer side are also dark red (Group 53B) and the inner side are of a bit darker purple red colour (Group 53A).

After opening, the basal petal spots retain light yellow green colour (Group 1C) on the outer and inner sides of the outermost petals. The basal petal spot of the innermost petals also remain of the same light yellow colour (Group 1D) on the outer and the inner sides. No variegations observed on the flowers.

The general tonality of the open flower is dark purple red (Group 53A); and as the flower ages no change in the general tonality observed at the end of the 6th day. Afterwards, the general tonality changes to dark purple red (Group 60A).

The flowers showed long lasting on the plant - approximately 6 to 7 days under normal growing conditions. As a cut flower – not tested. Senesced petals drop away cleanly.

Petals:

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
The objective of the hybridization was to create a new and distinct rose plant with unique qualities, such as:

  1. Compact and uniform growth and flowering when grown as a plant from cuttings;

  2. Abundant attractive, recurrent flowers;

  3. Attractive and abundant foliage; and

  4. Resistance to diseases encountered in landscapes and gardens.

This combination of qualities is not present in prior rose cultivars. These objectives have been substantially achieved and in that distinguish ‘KORcasima’ from all other varieties.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY
The ‘KORcasima’ variety originated from a controlled crossing in a breeding program of two distinct parents during the summer of 2002. The crossing was between an ‘un-named seedling’ and ‘Insel Mainau’ by Reimer Kordes, 1959.

As part of a rose development program, Wilhelm Kordes germinated seeds from the aforementioned hybridization and conducted evaluations and observations on the resulting seedlings in a controlled environment in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany.

The resulting seeds were planted during the following winter. The resulting seedlings were evaluated and exhibited distinctive physical and biological characteristics. The new rose plant was selected as a single plant from the seedling beds due to its superior characteristics and asexually propagated for further evaluation. This new and distinctive rose variety is named ‘KORcasima’.

The new rose plant ‘KORcasima’ was selected in May, 2003 from the seedling beds to be asexually propagated for further evaluation. The first asexual propagation of ‘KORcasima’ was done by budding to seedling understocks in July, 2003 at the inventor's nursery in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany.

This initial and other subsequent propagations conducted in controlled environments demonstrate that ‘KORcasima’ reproduces true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS
The ‘KORcasima’ may be distinguished from its seed parent, an ‘un-named seedling’, by the following combination of characteristics:

  1. The flower size of the ‘un-named seedling’ is small, while the flower size of ‘KORcasima’ is medium to large.

  2. The petal count of the ‘un-named seedling’ is semi-double, while the petal count of ‘KORcasima’ is very double.

The new rose plant may be distinguished from its pollen parent, an ‘Insel Mainau’ by the following combination of characteristics:

  1. The disease resistance of ‘Insel Mainau’ is poor, while the disease resistance of ‘KORcasima’ is good.

  2. The height of ‘Insel Mainau’ is 40–50 cm, while the height of ‘KORcasima’ is 70–80 cm.
