Description

The old repeat-flowering rose was once regarded as one of the finest repeat flowering rose hybrids and remains a true gem in any garden. Its luxurious medium to large (7-9 cm), very double (25 - 35 petals) cup-shaped blooms, display a rich burgundy purple colour with blueberry and purple velvet shades and black velvety markings on the upper side of the petals, creating a crimson tint. Occasionally, white stripes may appear on the inner petals, adding depth and richness to the color, further emphasized by golden stamens at the center. The same effect is given by the golden stamens in the center. Has a lovely rich rose oil aroma reminiscent of Gallicas or Damask roses, often described as the quintessential 'rose' scent. It’s no surprise that ‘Souvenir du Docteur Jamain’ has remained beloved since its introduction.

The variety blooms abundantly and repeats flowering throughout the growing season. The growth character is vigorous, spreading, about 150 - 300 cm in height, and about 100 cm wide. The nearly thornless, flexible branches can be tied to supports like climbing roses or bent and pinned to encourage blooming along their entire length. The semi-glossy foliage transitions from bronze to a refined green, adding elegance to the plant's appearance.

To preserve the beauty of its blooms, it is recommended to plant this rose in partial shade, as full sun can scorch the petals, diminishing their vibrant color. Abundant fertilization supports vigorous growth and encourages repeat flowering in flushes throughout the season. However, avoid pruning too harshly—cutting back more than half its height may inhibit reblooming.

Disease resistance is average, so preventive fungicide treatments for rust, black spot, and powdery mildew are advisable. While the flowers are rain-resistant, they are prone to sunburn in full sunlight. This variety is winter-hardy and well-suited for USDA zones 4 and warmer (-28.9°C to -31.7°C).

‘Souvenir du Docteur Jamain’ thrives in moderately dry or hot, dry climates, especially when grown in partial shade and given attentive care. Its fragrant blooms make stunning bouquets and look exquisite in a vase.

This old rose 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' was the favorite rose of Vita Sackville West, a poet, writer and well-known English gardener, who considered it the best climbing rose for northern regions.
