Description

Healthy and distinctive rose variety has shown to be uniform and stable throughout different climates. It has a very good, nearly continuous flowering habit, producing all season long delicately yellow old fashioned flowers with a strong sweet fragrance. Deep green, glossy and dense leaves covering compact and rounded plant provide a perfect background for its flowers.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

The description of rose variety ‘Solero’ is provided with color references made using The Royal Horticultural Society (London, England) Colour Chart, 2001 except where common terms of color are used.

FLOWERING

This rose variety has very good repeat flowering, almost continuous, flowers all season long, from summer until the frosts. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, they are simply too many to count.

Flower bud:

The length of the flower bud of this rose variety upon opening is about 2.5 - 2.7 cm from base of receptacle to end of the bud, and the width is about 2.2 - 2.4 cm at its widest point. The bud form is long, pointed ovoid. As the sepals first unfold, the bud color is yellow-green (Group 1C). When ¼ open, the upper surface of petals is medium yellow (Group 5B/5C) and the lower surface is medium yellow (Group 5C). The guard petals are light green (Group 145A, 145B, and 145C). The flower buds appear on the peduncle several together, generally, 3-5 buds per flowering stem.

The sepals are average, about 2.0 - 2.5 cm long and about 9 - 10 mm wide. The sepals have generally subulate shape, with generally cirrose apex. There are weak foliaceous appendages on 3 of the 5 sepals. The base of the sepals is flat at union with the receptacle. The sepals surface texture on the inner side is covered in fine white hairs and with stipulate glands, on the outer surface is smooth and stipitate glands are absent. The colour on the upper surface is yellow-green (Group 144A / 144B) and on the lower surface the colour is yellow-green (Group 144A) with intonations of grayed-red (Group 182A).

The receptacle is funnel shaped, the surface texture is smooth, about 7 - 8 mm long and about 6 - 7 mm in diameter. The colour is the same as on the sepals, yellow-green (Group 144A).

The peduncle is moderately long, approximately 3 - 3 5 cm long and has diameter of about 2 - 3 mm, the surface is covered with stipitate glands. The colour of the peduncle is medium green (Group 144A) with dark brown purple anthocyanin (Group 178A).

Bloom:

The flowers are medium sized. When open, the average flower diameter is 6.5 - 7.5 cm and the average flower height is about 3.5 - 4.0 cm. The general flower form is cupped rosette, often petaloids in the center form a button eye. The shape of the flower when viewed from the side upon opening on the upper side is flattened convex and flat on the lower part. The fully open flower on the upper part has flattened convex shape and on the lower part is concave. They are very double, there are approximately 40-45 petals under normal conditions.

Upon opening, the colour of the flowers on the outermost petals is light yellow (Group 4C and 4D) from the upper surface and medium yellow (Group 5B and Group 5C) on the lower surface. While the innermost petals on the outer and on the lower surface are light yellow (Group 4C). Basal petal spot on the outermost petals has light yellow green colour (Group 1B) on the upper surface and medium yellow (Group 5A) on the lower surface. The colour of the basal petal spot on the innermost petals on the upper and on the lower surface is medium yellow (Group 5A).

After the opening the colour of the upper and the lower surface on the outermost petals is light yellow (Group 4D). While the innermost petals have yellow colour (Group 5D) on the upper and on the lower surface. The basal petal spot on the outermost petals from the upper and lower surface has medium yellow colour (Group 4B) and the colour of the basal petal spot on the innermost petals is medium yellow (Group 5B) on the upper and lower surface.

The general tonality of the just opened flowers is light yellow (Group 4C). At the end of the 7th day there is no change in the general tonality of the flowers, they remain light yellow (Group 4D).

They last on the plant fairly long, for about 5-6 days. Senesced petals drop away cleanly.

Petals:

The petals have smooth and moderately thick texture. The shape of the petals is deltoid with a round apex shape and acute shape of the base. The margins of the petals are entire, with slight undulations in the center of margin, petals reflex slightly. The length of the petals is about 3.0 - 3.5 cm and the width is about 2.5 - 3 cm. The arrangement of the petals is regular, with overlapping edges.

There are about 10 - 15 petaliods usually present of the flowers of ‘Solero’. The shape of petaliods is linear to elliptic, their base is pointed and the apex is round and ruffled, and the edges, and the entire surface of the petaliods is undulated. Peetaloid are about 15 mm long and 7 mm wide. Their colour on the inner and on the outer surface is medium yellow (Group 6A).

Fragrance:

The fragrance of this variety is strong and sweet.

Reproductive parts:

There are approximately 45-50 statemens per flower, they are regularly arranged around the styles.

Filaments are about 6-7 mm long and medium yellow in colour (Group 2A).

Anthers are about 2 - 2.5 mm long and dark yellow orange in colour (Group 22A).

The pollen is scarce, almost absent.

There are approximately 20-30 pistils present on the flowers of ‘Solero’.

The stigmas are located slightly inferior in position to anthers, their colour is light yellow green (Group 1C).

Styles are 5 - 6 mm long and have light yellow green colour (Group 1C).

The hips of this variety are yellow-green (Group 144B), rounded and small, about 1 cm long and 1 cm wide.

PLANT

This rose variety has a moderately vigorous growth habit. Forms compact, bushy but spreading plant, with branches often intertwining and growing more horizontally, slightly similar to groundcover roses. The mature plant is about 60 - 70 cm in height and has about the same width, 50 - 60 cm.

Due to its compact and bushy growth is a perfect choice for planting along pathway and along , as well as in rosebeds, mix borders and rose borders, mixed with other perennials. Also would look stunning planted in large massives of single variety or combined with other rose varieties.

Foliage:
The foliage of ‘Solero’ is dense and abundant. There are normally 5 to 7 leaflets on the normal leaves in the middle of the stem. Leaf size is medium, about 10 cm long and about 6.5 cm wide. On the upper surface the leaves are glossy and smooth, but on the underside they are matte, rough and thin. The colour of the juvenile foliage on the upper leaf surface is dark green (Group 137A). The mature foliage on the upper leaf surface has dark green colour (Group 137A) and the lower leaf surface is medium brown green (Group 147B). Lower leaf surface is medium brown green (Group 147B). Anthocyanin intonation is absent on the foliage of this rose variety.

The stipules are about 15 mm long and about 7 mm between the tips of the stipule, the main body of the stipule is 5 mm in width. The shape of the stipules is longitudinally flanged or winged along the middle. There are present stipitate glands on the margins on the stipules. The color is medium brown green (Group 138A) with grayed-purple (Group 184B) anthocyanin.

The petiole length is 8-11 mm and the diameter is about 1 mm. The underneath surface is with occasional prickles, and there are present stipitate glands on the margins of the petiole. The colour is dark green (Group 138A) with grayed-purple (Group 184B) anthocyanin present on juvenile tissue.

Petiole rachis is about 18-22 mm long and has a diameter of about 1.0 mm. The colour is dark green (Group 138A) with grayed-purple (Group 184B) anthocyanin present on juvenile tissue. The margins are with very few stipitate glands present and some occasional prickles present.

Leaflets:

The leaflets are medium sized, the average size of the terminal leaflet is about 4 cm and width is about 2.5 cm. The shape of the leaflets is ovate, the base shape is also ovate, and the apex is acute. The margins of the leaflets are serrated, the type of serration is small and single. The texture surface of the leaflets is thin and leathery.

Wood:

The new wood has medium green colour (Group 144A), the bark is smooth. The adult wood is dark brown green (Group 146B), the bark is rough.

Prickles:

There are quite many sharp prickles on the stems of this variety, about 7 - 12 per 10 cm of the stem length. The shape of the prickles is deep concave, the average length is about 6-7 mm. Th ecolour of the young prickles is light green brown (Group 160B) with brown red (Group 181B) anthocyanin. THe mature prickles are dark brown (Group 166A) and medium brown (Group 166B), senescing to medium bown (Group N167B) and with brown red (Group 181B) anthocyanin.

Small prickles:

Small prickles are absent on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes of this rose variety.

Disease resistance:

The variety showed above average resistance to Powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca pannosa), rust (P. disciflorum), black spot (Diplocarpon rosae), and botrytis (Botrytis cinerea) diseases under normal growing conditions. Pest resistance has not been tested yet.

The variety has been grown successfully in Zone 5, therefore it is recommended for growing in climates similar to USDA 5 and warmer.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY

The rose ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ variety originated from a controlled crossing made by Tim Hermann Kordes in a rose breeding program between ‘Korgosumu’ / ‘Gelber Engel’ by the same breeder, and an un-named seedling.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY

The controlled crossing was made during the summer of 2000. The following winter, Tim-Hermann Kordes planted the resulting seeds from the aforementioned hybridization in a glasshouse where they subsequently germinated and grew. Evaluations and observations were made on the resulting seedlings in a controlled environment in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany. The resulting seedlings exhibited distinctive physical and biological characteristics. The new rose plant ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ was selected in May, 2001 from the seedling beds to be asexually propagated for further evaluation. The first asexual reproduction of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ was done by budding to seedling understocks in August, 2001 at the inventor's nursery in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany.

These initial and other subsequent propagations conducted in controlled environments demonstrate that ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ reproduces true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY
The objective of the hybridization was to create a new and distinct rose plant with unique qualities, such as:

 1. Uniform growth and flowering;

 2. Abundant attractive, recurrent flowers;

 3. Attractive and abundant foliage; and

 4. Resistance to diseases encountered in landscapes and gardens.

These are the unique characteristics that distinguish ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ from all other varieties of roses known to the date.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS

The ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ rose plant may be distinguished from its seed parent, ‘Korgosumu’ / ‘Gelber Engel’ by the following combination of characteristics:

 1. The growth habit of the seed parent is bushy and upright, while the growth habit of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ is spreading.

 2. The petal count of the seed parent is semi-double, while the petal count of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ is very double.

The ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ rose plant may be distinguished from its pollen parent, an ‘un-named seedling’ by the following combination of characteristics:

 - The flower color of the pollen parent is apricot, while the flower color of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ is yellow.

 - The growth habit of the pollen parent is upright, while the growth habit of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ is spreading.

COMPARISON WITH THE CLOSEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CULTIVAR

The closest known cultivar to ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ rose is Groundcover rose ‘Korsupigel’ / ‘Smile’ by Tim Hermann Kordes, 2007. Although the ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ is very similar to the rose variety, they can be distinguished by the following characteristics:

  - the flowers of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ are full, with the petal count of about 40-45 petals and have cupped rosette shape whereas the flowers of ‘Korsupigel’ / ‘Smile’ have 40-60 and cupped to flat;

  - also the flowers of ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ have strong, sweet fragrance while the flowers of ‘Korsupigel’ / ‘Smile’ have light to none fragrance;

  - finally ‘Korgeleflo’ / ‘Solero’ has larger plant, with the height of about 60-65 cm and smaller foliage, with leaflets of about 4.5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, and the Korsupigel’ / ‘Smile’ forms more shorter plant, aferaging to about 40-50 cm but has larger foliage, with leaflets of 7.5 cm long and 5 cm wide.
