Description

Old Moss rose got its name for the fragrant green-reddish hairs on the sepals that surround the unopened buds and emphasize the beauty of the flowers. Fragrant very full flowers of this rose are pure pink with lighter edges and reverse, they have 40-50 or more petals, and the average diameter of the flower is about 6 - 7 cm, from cup-shaped to flat with a moderate yet attractive fragrance. Profusely flowering, the blooms are gathered in small clusters in early summer. It may repeat the flowering later in the season with flowers that appear singly. The medium-green matte leaves contrast nicely and have few prickles.

Forms very upright and strong plants, of about 90-150 cm in height and 90-120 cm in width, well branched, with vigorous growth character, later on when well established can switch to growing on its own roots. It feels best in the full sun, in moist but well-drained fertile soils. Requires abundant watering, especially in dry seasons, and mulch around the roots to preserve the moisture. Sanitary and training pruning needs to be made at the end of winter to remove all diseased, damaged or crossed branches and to shorten the overgrown shoots.

The disease resistance is average, needs preventive spraying with fungicides from black spot and powdery mildew. Rose chafer and other pests can also damage the flowers.

This compact Moss rose can be grown in containers, as well as in group plantings and landscape compositions; its flower attracts bees and other pollinators. Its flowers can also be used for cutting.

Winter hardiness - USDA zone 5b-9b.
