Description

‘Raspberry Cream Twirl’ drapes arches and fences with generous clusters of very full, exhibition-style blooms, raspberry-pink marbled with purple cream - each flower of this variety has a unique pattern. Although it has a light sweet green apple aroma, the exquisite color of its flowers, attractive and shiny foliage and almost prickless canes make it irresistible to brush past and ideal for cutting. The flowers are produced in large numbers almost continuously, starting in spring, and show better than average disease resistance.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

Throughout this description of the rose variety 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' is provided with color descriptions using terminology of the The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, except where common terms of color definition are employed. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil. All measurements are given in centimeters.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY:
The rose variety 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' originated in the nursery at Le Cannet-Des-Maures, Var, France, by Alain Meilland as result of artificial pollination wherein two parents were crossed which previously had been studied in the hope that they would contribute the desired characteristics.

 The female parent (i.e., the seed parent) was the Floribunda rose ‘Meinoiral’ / ‘Deborah’;

The male parent (i.e., the pollen parent) was the product of the cross pollination of the Climbing Floribunda rose ‘Meihestries’ / ‘Sorbet Fruité’ with the Floribunda rose ‘Meidomonac’ / ‘Bonica 82’.

The parentage of the rose variety 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' can be summarized as follows:

 ‘Meinoiral’ / ‘Deborah’ × (‘Meihestries’ / ‘Sorbet Fruité’ × ‘Meidomonac’ / ‘Bonica 82’).

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY:

The primary objective of this rose variety breeding was to create a new rose variety with strong health which forms in abundance on a substantially continuous basis beginning in the spring with attractive very double blossoms with the petal coloration of intense red-purple streaked with lighter red-purple.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY:

The rose variety 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' well meets the needs of the horticultural industry. It can be grown to advantage as an attractive climber in parks, gardens, public areas, and in residential settings. This variety is particularly well suited for providing attractive colorful ornamentation. 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' displays good repeat blooming beginning in the spring. The intense red-purple blossoms contrast nicely with the glossy dark green foliage. Commonly the thorns are present at a somewhat sparse frequency. 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' distinct rose plant that characterized by the following combination of characteristics:

abundantly and substantially continuously forms attractive very full blossoms wherein the petal coloration is intense red-purple streaked with lighter red-purple,

exhibits a very strong climbing growth habit and commonly bears few thorns,

forms attractive very dense dark green foliage with a glossy upper surface,

 displays good disease tolerance, and

is well suited for providing distinctive colorful ornamentation; substantially as herein shown and described.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS

The 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' may be distinguished from its seed parent ‘Meinoiral’ / ‘Deborah’, by the following combination of characteristics:

The seed parent ‘Meinoiral’ / ‘Deborah’ forms clear medium pink blossoms while the rose variety 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' forms striped red blossoms having a substantially lesser number of petals.

The pollen parent was not released to the public and no longer exists, and accordingly, the male parent is not available for comparative purposes. The 'Meiteratol' / 'Raspberry Cream Twirl' may be distinguished from the ancestors by the following combination of characteristics:

The ‘Meidomonac’ / ‘Bonica 82’ variety forms light pink blossoms also having a substantially lesser number of petals. The ‘Meihestries’ / ‘Sorbet Fruité’ variety, unlike the previously identified varieties, is a Climber and forms dissimilar blossoms that are light orange to golden in coloration.
