A delight to behold in the garden or vase.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

Throughout this description of the rose variety 'Pink Intuition' is provided with color descriptions using terminology of the The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001), except where common terms of color definition are employed. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.

FLOWERING

This rose variety has a very abundant and almost continuous flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with short breaks from summer until frosts; in greenhouse conditions able to produce flowers all year round.

Flower bud:

The flower buds of 'Pink Intuition' rose variety are medium sized, about 2.8 to 3.1 cm long and 3 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl. After calyx breaks the bud lengths is approximately 3.8 to 4.5 cm, with an average length of approximately 4 cm The bud form is ovate in the longitudinal section just before the opening of the sepals. When the sepals first divide, the bud color is medium yellow (Group 2B) striped with light red pink (Group 38C). The colour after the calix breaks is orange red (Group 31A) striped with dark purple red (Group 53A). Calyx is star-shaped when fully opened with the sepals folding back.

The sepals have a length of about 5.0 to 7.0 cm and a width of 6.0 cm on average. The shape of the sepals is lanceolate, the surface texture is smooth on the upper surface and hairy on the lower surface. The colour on the upper surface is medium brown green (Group 147B) and on the lower surface is dark brown green (Group 146B). There are 3 medium to strong appendaged sepals and there are 2 unappendaged sepals with hairy edges. The extensions are denticulate and commonly are long to very long.

The receptacle is medium green (Group 144A) and small.

The peduncle is long, averaging to about 8.5 - 11.5 cm in length with average length of approximately 10 cm, erect, stiff and has some small hairs on the surface. The colour of the peduncle is medium green (Group 144A).

Bloom:

The flowers are large, the average diameter of the open flower is about 10 to 12 cm (~ 4 - 4.5 in). When first open, the flower form is high-centered, when fully opens the flower has flattened convex shape at the upper part when viewed from the side, and flattened convex to convex shape at the lower part when viewed from the side; the shape is irregularly rounded when viewed from above. Flowers are double, the number of petals under normal conditions is commonly approximately 31 to 39, and an average number is approximately 36. They are born in generally one per stem when grown under forced greenhouse conditions; however, sometimes during forced culture an axillary eye or eyes below the flower develop to form 1 or 2 flowers.

When flowers open the colour of the petals in the middle zone on the inner surface is pink (Group 50C) striped with red pink (Group 53C) and on the outer surface is pink (Group 50C) striped with darker shade of red pink (Group 53C). The colour of the petals on the marginal zone on the inner surface is pink (Group 50C) striped with red pink (Group 53C) , while on the outer surface pink (Group 50C) with darker striping of red pink (Group 53C). The base of the petals has a small basal spot (which can be absent when the plant is grown outdoors) of medium yellow (Group 9B) on the inner side of the petals and of light yellow (Group 1D) on the outer side of the petals.

Petals:

The texture of the petals is thick and the surface is smooth; the shape of the petals of the first row commonly exhibits a broad ovate configuration, the undulation of the petal margins is average, and the reflexing of the margins is average. Average length of the petals is about 5.5 to 6.5 cm with a mean of approximately 5.9 cm, and a standard deviation of 0.4 mm while the width is about 5.5 to 6.9 cm with a mean of approximately 5.3 cm, and a standard deviation of 6 mm.

The petals of this rose variety normally detach cleanly. Under normal climate conditions the petals last fairly long, on the plant they last for about 5 - 6 days, as a cut flower their lastingness is also about 5 to 6 days.

Fragrance:

The fragrance of the rose 'Pink Intuition' is light and fresh.

Reproductive parts:

The number of stamens is 136 on average per flower, they are somewhat regularly arranged around the styles.

The anthers are medium in size, all open at approximately the same time and have medium yellow orange colour (Group 14C).

The colour of the filaments is dark yellow (Group 14A) , and when the flower is fully open the colour changes to red (Group 37C) and to medium yellow (Group 8B), they are medium in length, and not all possess an anther.

The pollen is medium yellow orange (Group 21A).

The number of pistils is 147 on average.

The colour of the styles is red pink (Group 52A) and they are medium in length.

Stigma generally are present at the same level as the anthers, but a few anthers may be higher, the colour of the stigma is light yellow orange (Group 18B).

The hips of this rose variety are rarely formed, if formed in the longitudinal section they are in the shape of a funnel and are approximately 23 mm in diameter.

PLANT

The rose variety 'Pink Intuition' is classified as a Hybrid Tea rose. The growth character is bushy, semi-vigorous to vigorous. Plants which were pruned to a height of 20 to 30 cm produce floral stems having a length of approximately 40 to 100 cm, and an average length of those branches is approximately 70 cm. Mature and well-established plants have a height of about 70 - 150 cm (2' 4" - 4' 11") and the width of about 50 - 60 cm (1' 8" - 1' 12").

Foliage:

There is a typical number of the foliage for the Hybrid Tea rose class and the common number of leaves is approximately 90 - 100. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves varies from 3, 5, and to 7, including the terminal leaflet. The foliage is large, about 19 cm in length and about 15 cm in width.

The colour of the juvenile foliage is dark brown green (Group 147A) with some bronze coloration on the upper surface and dark brown purple (Group 183C) with some green coloration on the middle of the under surface. The colour of the foliage on floral stem is dark green (Group 139A) on the upper surface and medium brown green (Group 147B) on the lower surface. The mature foliage on the upper side is dark brown green (Group 147A) and on the lower side is medium brown green (Group 147B).

Leaflets:

The size of the leaflets is large, they are approximately 6 to 9 cm in length, and approximately 7 cm on average, with a standard deviation of 0.67 mm and are about approximately 4 to 6.3 cm wide, and are approximately 4.6 mm on average. The shape of the leaflets is rounded to cordate at the base of the terminal leaflet and convex in cross section, the shape of the leaflet tip is acute and the base shape is rounded. The surface texture of the leaflets is leathery, consistent with medium glossiness. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and irregular.

The petiole has medium brown colour (Group 173A) on young shoots with green and bronze coloration, while on the flowering stems the colour is dark brown green (Group 146A) on the upper surface and medium brown green (Group 146C) on the under surface. The colour of the petiole on the leaves on mature wood is dark brown green (Group 146A) on the upper surface and medium brown green (Group 146C) on the under surface. The petiole is approximately 16 to 22 mm, approximately 19 mm on average, with a standard deviation of 0.22 mm long and commonly bears some prickles (often 1 to 3 per petiole), and the inner surface is grooved with non-glandular edges.

The stipules are adnate, medium in size, and commonly 3 to 4 cm (with average 3.5 cm) in length, and approximately 7 to 9 mm (on average 8 mm) in width at the mid-point, and approximately 1.8 to 2.2 cm (with average 2 cm) at the distal end. The colour of the stipules is dark brown green colour (Group 146A).

The veins have light green colour (Group 151A) at the distal end with light green brown (Group 160A) at the proximal end; the venation pattern is reticulate.

Wood:

The new wood of this rose variety has medium brown green colour (Group 146D) with medium green (Group 144A), the bark is smooth. The mature wood is dark brown green (Group 146A), the bark remains smooth.

Stems:

The flowering stems have medium green (Group 144A) to dark brown green (Group 146B) colour and smooth bark. The diameter of the stems is commonly approximately 8 to 11 mm (with average of 9 mm). The stem pubescence is not observed on the stems of this rose variety. The above measurements are all variable, depending on growing conditions in a season.

Prickles:

On a typical floral stem having a length of 70 cm, there commonly are no thorns on the 30 cm below the bud, for the next 20 cm no or very few thorns, and for the last 20 cm some thorns irregularly arranged having lengths of approximately 3 mm to 1 cm and an average length of approximately 5.6 mm. On a young shoot having a length of approximately 30 cm, there commonly are no thorns. The shape of the prickles is convex on the upper edge and concave on the under edge. The colour of the young prickles is medium brown purple (Group 181A); the mature prickles have medium brown (Group 165A) to light brown (Group 165B) colour.

Small prickles:

There are no small prickles observed on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes of this rose variety.

Disease resistance:

The rose variety 'Pink Intuition' has good resistance to most common rose diseases, , particularly to mildew, blackspot and rust in greenhouse conditions, with an average day temperature maintained at 17.5 degrees C. In a garden environment the resistance to black spot and mildew is somewhat weak. The pest resistance has not been tested yet.

The winter hardiness for rose 'Pink Intuition' is not determined since the variety is primarily intended for cut flower production under greenhouse growing conditions. However it is reported that this rose can withstand winters in the garden in climates similar to USDA 6 and warmer.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY

The rose variety ‘Delstrifram’ / 'Pink Intuition' was discovered by Arnaud Delbard in a greenhouse at Malicorne, France, during 2003, and is a spontaneous mutation of unknown causation of the ‘Delstriro’ / ‘Red Intuition’ variety . Had the ‘Delstrifram’ / 'Pink Intuition' not been discovered and preserved it would have been lost to mankind.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY

The primary objective of this rose variety breeding was to preserve the new rose variety that displays a bushy growth habit, and forms attractive double long lasting clear pink flowers that are striped with dark pink , produces flowers in abundance, exhibits the ability readily to be forced, and is resistant to diseases when grown under greenhouse conditions.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY

The objective was achieved, along with other important improvements, and this rose variety incorporated the following unique combination of characteristics:

 forms attractive double long lasting clear pink flowers that are striped with dark pink;  has a good vase life;

 forms medium length relatively straight stems, and rigid and substantially straight peduncles;

disease resistant when grown under greenhouse conditions .

Asexual reproduction of this variety by budding showed that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions came true to form, established and transmitted through the succeeding propagations.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS

The ‘Delstrifram’ / ‘Pink Intuition’ may be distinguished from its parent, by the following combination of characteristics:

‘Delstriro’ / ‘Red Intuition’ variety forms red flowers that the striped with darker red while ‘Delstrifram’ / ‘Pink Intuition’ has pink flowers that are striped with dark pink.
