Description
This rose is a perfect choice for making a statement. ‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber’ is a remarkable climbing rose with vigorous and strong growth habit, stretching up to 3 – 6 m tall and forming a waterfalls of bright crimson flowers. The flowering is profuse and long lasting, flowers are very resistant to unfavorable weather conditions.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
FLOWERING
It is widely accepted that the ‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber’ has repeating flowering, however mostly the repeat flowering is very scarce. Starts to flower in the middle of the rose season and the first flush lasts up to 1 month under normal weather conditions.
Flower bud:
The flower buds are medium sized, ovoid with rounded base and pointed tip. The colour of the bud when the sepals start to divide is deep crimson. When half open the colour of the bud remains mostly the same, deep crimson, with slight silvery shades on the underside of the petals closer to the base of the outer petals. They appear on the flowering branches in small clusters, mostly 3 to 5 together.
The colour of the sepals on the upper surface is medium green. They are awl-shaped, with pubescent surface texture on the upper surface and smooth on the lower surface. There are 3 lightly appendaged sepal and 2 unappendaged sepals with smooth edges.
The receptacle has medium green to dark green colour, often with purple intonations, the surface texture is smooth and the shape is campanulate.
Bloom:
The flowers are medium sized, with an average diameter of the open flower of about 6 – 7 cm (about 2.5 inches). They have a cupped shape when just open, later turning flatter and more reflexed, the tip of the outer petals curl back. Under normal growing conditions the flowers are semi-double, with total petals count of about 20 – 22 petals per flower.
The colour of the flowers when just opened is crimson, with slight silver intonations closer to the base on the underside of the petals. The colour remains unchanged on the flowers for quite a long time, up to 5 – 7 days. Later the colour changes to slightly lighter, having more pink and light purple intonations and starts to appear more pinkish.
The flowers are very resistant to a wide range of unfavorable weather conditions. They last on a plant about 12 – 14 days under normal growing conditions.

PLANT
‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber’ has very robust and vigorous growth habit. Forms very broad and tall plant with strong and long basal shoots that can reach up to 200 – 400 cm, the plant is well branched, have climbing and bushy character. The mature and well-established plant can reach about 365 – 610 cm tall and span from 100 to 240 cm when mature enough.
This rose would be a perfect choice for decorating carious large structures from walls to large fences, pergolas, arches, pillars or doorways. Also, it is suitable for growing as a large shrub or a hedge, and its long, strong yet flexible branches makes this rose variety suitable for achieving many landscape and design tasks.
Foliage:
There is a profuse quantity of foliage on this variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is 5. New foliage on the upper side has brown-red-purple colour and the colour of the lower side is brown purple. The old foliage on the upper side is dark green and on the lower side is dark brown green.
Wood:
The new wood has medium green colour, sometimes tinted with purple and smooth bark. The colour of the old wood is dark brown green and the bark is smooth, with some rough patches.
Prickles:
There is a few prickles on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes. The colour of the young prickles is medium purple green while the mature prickles have medium gray brown colour. They are medium sized, about 5 - 7 mm long, the shape of the prickles is pyramidal with broad base.
Small prickles:
Small prickles are not observed on the main stalks and on the laterals from main stalks.
Disease resistance:
The variety is susceptible to black spot and mildew. The resistance to rust and botrytis is very good. Pest resistance has not been tested.
The variety is recommended for growing in climate zones similar to USDA 5 and warmer and require winter protection in more colder climates.
