Description
The historic French rose 'Paul Neyron' is one of the most widely cultivated and spectacular Hybrid Perpetual varieties, renowned for producing some of the largest flowers among repeat flowering roses. It remains a favorite among rosarians worldwide for its enormous, peony-like blooms and strong fragrance. Its luxuriant, densely double flowers may reach up to 20 cm (7.9 in) in diameter, making it one of the most impressive pink roses ever bred.
The flowers typically have 15 - 18 cm (5.9 - 7.1 in) in diemeter, occasionally larger, and are very double, with 50 - 55 petals per flower. They are initially globular, later opening from a perfectly cupped form to a flatter rosette shape. The blooms are usually borne singly or in small clusters and are held firmly on strong stems without bending of the peduncles. Their coloration is a rich, saturated pink with darker undertones, subtle lilac reflections, and a distinctive silvery reverse that enhances their depth and charm. Some blooms may appear slightly untidy at the center, adding to their old-fashioned character. The fragrance is strong and floral, warm-pink in impression, with soft, slightly sweet nuances that range from moderate to powerful depending on weather conditions.
Flowering is long-lasting and abundant, occurring in flushes throughout the season, often continuing almost until frost. Deadheading after the first flush encourages subsequent bloom.
Rose variety 'Paul Neyron' forms a powerful yet relatively neat, with a strong upright growth habit. It typically reaches 120 - 150 cm (4 - 5 ft) in height, but may grow up to 215 cm (7.1 ft) under favorable conditions, with a width of about 90 - 120 cm (3 - 4 ft). The canes of this rose are strong, stiff, straight, and long, nearly without prickles, and densely covered with foliage. The leaves are large, leathery, glossy, and range from light to bright green in colour, also generally very healthy.
'Paul Neyron' is vigorous, resilient, and low maintenance rose, responding well to attentive care. It is quite resistant to black spot and powdery mildew, though occasionally susceptible to rust and may suffer during prolonged rains. In cold, humid climates, preventive treatment against fungal diseases is advisable. Hardiness is excellent, suitable for growing in climates similar to USDA Zones 4b - 9b, although winter protection is recommended in northern regions.
The rose prefers sunny positions and fertile, loose, well-drained soil to prevent moisture stagnation. Regular watering and organic or mineral feeding improve performance. Sanitary pruning after the first flush of flowering supports repeat flowering later in the season. Prune at the end of winter or early spring to remove dead or weak stems and maintain a compact form. Due to its vigor, this variety requires sufficient space.
'Paul Neyron' is well suited to the back of mixed borders, group or solitary plantings, and can even be trained as a small climber. Its immense flowers are outstanding for cutting and floral arrangements, and it also performs well in borders, flower beds, and large containers on terraces or balconies.
Its combination of impressive flower size, abundant repeat blooming, and relatively good disease resistance makes it a reliable and spectacular choice for gardeners seeking dramatic results with manageable effort.
