DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
Throughout this description of the rose variety 'Patience' is provided with color descriptions using terminology of the The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001), except where common terms of color definition are employed. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.
FLOWERING
The flowering habit of ‘Patience’ is continuous, as this rose variety was primarily bred for cut flower production in greenhouse conditions. In greenhouse conditions, it is able to bloom all year round.
Flower bud:
The flower buds of ‘Patience' rose variety are medium sized, about 2.7 cm long and 1.9 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl. The bud form is pointed ovoid. When the sepals first divide, the bud color is medium yellow (Group 3C). When half open, the upper sides of the petals are white (Group 155B) with light yellow (Group 3D) at base and the lower sides of the petals are white (Group 155C) with light yellow (Group 3D).
Calyx is star-shaped, irregularly rounded when fully opened with the sepals folding back, the length is about 3.5 cm and the diameter is 3.5 cm.
The sepals have a length of about 2.9 cm and a width of 0.9 - 1 cm. The shape of the sepals is subulate with canescent margins, the surface texture is pubescent on the upper surface and smooth on the lower surface. The colour on the upper surface is medium green (Group 143A) with light green (Group 144D) at the base. On the lower surface the colour is medium green (Group 144A) with some dark brown green (Group 146A) along the margin and appendages. There are 3 normally appendaged sepals and there are 2 unappendaged sepals with hairy edges.
The receptacle is medium green (Group 144A), campanulate shaped and has a smooth surface. The size of the receptacle is small, about 0.7 cm long and about 1.1 cm in diameter.
The peduncle is long, averaging to about 9 cm in length, strong and has a smooth surface with few small prickles. The colour of the peduncle is medium green (Group 144A).
Bloom:
The flowers are large, the average diameter of the open flower is about 8.3 cm. When first open, the flower form is cupped, the flower retains its form until the end flattens and all petal curl. Flowers are very full, the number of petals under normal conditions is 160-170. They are born in singly or in small clusters of 2-4 blooms together having corymb shape. The flowering stem has strong strength, long, and has an average length of about 30-50 cm.
The colour of the flower from the upper sides of the petals and on the reverse sides of the petals is white (Group 155C). The base of the petals is light yellow (Group 3D). The variegation is not observed on the flowers of this variety.
The general tonality at the end of the first day is white (Group 155C), at the end of the third day the general tonality becomes slightly lighter, white (Group 155A). No further change in colour is observed.
Petals:
The texture and the surface is smooth; the shape of the petals is obovate, the very outer petals are obdeltoid, the margins are notched. The apex is cuspidate, outer petals are rounded and the base of the petals is cuneate, and the petals form is incurved; tips are recurved and undulating. Average length of the petals is about 3.9 cm and the width is about 3.8 cm. The arrangement of the petals is imbricated, central petals are scrolled.
Normally the petaloids are not observed on the flowers of this rose variety.
The petals of this rose variety have good self-cleaning quality. The petals last on the plant for quite a long period, for about 12 days. As a cut flower they also last for about 10 days.
Fragrance:
The fragrance of the rose 'Patience' is strong, of an Old Rose character with a dash of lemon.
Reproductive parts:
The stamens normally are not present on the flowers of 'Patience'.

Stigmas are about 1 - 2 mm long and have medium yellow green colour (Group 151D).

The mature stem has an average length of about 30-50 cm and the diameter of 5 mm, the internode distance is 5-6 cm. The stem pubescence is not observed on the stems of 'Patience'. The above measurements are all variable, depending on growing conditions in a season.
Prickles:
There are ordinary prickles present on the main canes from base, about 3 per 5 cm of the stem length. On the laterals from main canes there is an ordinary quantity of prickles, 3 per 5 cm of the stem length. The shape of the prickles is concave curved inward, the length is about 9 mm. Disease resistance:
The rose variety 'Patience' has good resistance, particularly to mildew, blackspot and rust in greenhouse conditions, with on average day temperature maintained at 17.5 degrees C. In open air and garden conditions it is susceptible to most common rose diseases. The pest resistance has not been tested yet.
The cold hardiness is rather weak, it is not well suited for cold winters, however it is recorded that it can withstand winter in the garden in climates similar to USDA 7 and warmer.

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
Rose variety ‘Auspastor’ / 'Patience' originated by David Austin by crossing an unnamed, unpatented seedling with an unnamed, unpatented seedling.
BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY
The primary objective of this rose variety breeding was to create a new rose variety suitable for year round production under standard greenhouse conditions having buttermilk-colored blooms that fade almost to white, with an Old Rose fragrance and long vase life, which are produced on strong upright stems.
SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY
The objective was achieved, along with other important improvements, and this rose variety incorporated the following unique combination of characteristics:
butter-milk colored blooms fading almost to white;
an Old Rose fragrance;
a long vase life;
The plant also has a strong upright stem, which makes it suitable for year round cut flower production under standard greenhouse conditions.
Asexual reproduction of the new variety by budding as performed in greenhouses at Bowling Green Lane in Albrighton, The UK showed that the foregoing and other distinguishing characteristics came true to form, established and transmitted through succeeding asexual propagations. ‘Auspastor’ / 'Patience' may be asexually propagated by budding and grafting.
COMPARISON WITH PARENTS
The ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ may be distinguished from its seed parent, by the following combination of characteristics:
whereas the parent has lilac cupped blooms, ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ bears buttermilk colored, cupped rosette shaped blooms.
The ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ may be distinguished from its pollen parent by the following combination of characteristics:
The pollen parent bears yellow blooms with pointed petals, ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ bears flowers of a buttermilk color;
In addition, ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ bears blooms that are cupped rosette, whereas the pollen parent bears yellow colored, rosette shaped blooms.
COMPARISON WITH THE CLOSEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CULTIVAR
The most similar rose cultivars to the ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’ is the variety ‘Ausneil’ / ‘Portia’. and they may be distinguished by the following combination of characteristics:
the ‘Ausneil’ / ‘Portia’ has fewer petals, stamens and creamy-white blooms compared to ‘Auspastor’ / ‘Patience’, which has a greater number of petals, creamy-white blooms with a hint of blush and no stamens.
