Description

Her petals boast a vibrant blend of bright copper on the inner side and pale copper-yellow on the outer side, creating a striking visual impact that is both brilliant and tasteful. While it may exhibit a somewhat lighter shade as the season progresses, the initial color display is remarkable. The flower's shape is more dish-like than cupped, featuring charmingly loose petals that gracefully nod on extended stems. Infused with a robust Tea Rose fragrance, it carries a warm and sensuous undertone.

FLOWER
‘Pat Austin’ is a repeat flowering rose, it produces flowers continuously throughout the growing season, from early summer to frosts.

Flower bud:
The bud measures approximately 3.8 - 4.5 cm (1.5 - 1.75 inches) in length when the petals begin to unfurl. It has a long, pointed ovoid form.

Initially, when sepals first divide, the bud colour is dark purple red (Group 185A). When half open, the upper sides of the petals display hues of dark orange (Group 30C) or orange-red (Group 33B), while the lower sides take medium yellow orange colour (Group 21C).

The sepals have a major colour of medium green (Group 144A/B) with a base in dark purple red colour (Group 185A). Their surface texture is rough. Three sepals are normally or heavily appendaged, while two sepals are unappendaged with smooth, slightly hairy edges.

The receptacle has medium green colour (Group 144A/B) with a dark purple red (Group 185A) blush. Its shape is goblet-like, and its size is medium, about 1.02 cm × 0.76 cm (0.4 inches × 0.3 inches). The surface is slightly pimply.

The peduncle has a variable length, ranging from medium to short, averaging about 2.5-7.5 centimeters (1-3 inches). Its surface is prickly, and the colour is light green. The peduncle is slightly bending and slender.

Bloom:
The bloom is large to medium, with an average open size of about 8 - 10 cm (3-4 inches). Flowers are borne singly or several together in small clusters, and if in clusters, there are 1-5 per stem with an irregular shape. Stems are of medium size, normal, with an average length of about 61 cm (24 inches).

When first open, the flower form is loose to open cupped. Over time, the form becomes looser and more open, and petal size increases markedly with age, with outer petals curling back.

The upper side of the outer petals is light orange (Group 29B), middle petals are orange-red (Group 32B), and inner petals deepen to darker orange-red (Group 33B). The reverse side of the petals is medium yellow orange (Group 21C), with the basal one-quarter in dark yellow (Group 14B). The major colour on the upper side is orange-red Group 32B. Variegations are not observed on the petals.

At the end of the first day, the general tonality of the flower is slightly paler. At the end of the third day, the petals become paler, less orange, and more pink, tending to medium orange pink (Group 37A/B).

Petals:
Under normal conditions, there are 50 petals on the flower. Petals have a fairly thick, smooth texture. They are notched or undulating, deltoid, and heart-shaped. Outer petals are broad and almost round, while inner petals are narrower and ovoid. Tips are slightly recurved, and outer petal edges are slightly quilled. Petals are arranged informally, with a few large petaloids in the center.

Petals drop off cleanly before drying. On the plant, petals last for about 5-7 days. As a cut flower, lastingness has not been tested.

Fragrance:
The fragrance of ‘Pat Austing’ is strong, pleasant Tea Rose character.

Reproductive parts:
Anthers: Medium in size, numerous in quantity, and yellow in colour. They are regularly arranged around styles, rarely tucked in the calyx or party so.

Filaments: Colour is reddish or deep red (Group 33A).

Pollen is golden yellow.

Styles are greenish white at the base, and the top half has a streak of medium purple red (Group 58B).

Stigmas are yellow in colour.

PLANT
‘Pat Austin’ is characterized by vigorous, upright, and bushy growth with slightly arching flowering stems. 'Pat Austin' takes the form of a sizable shrub with gracefully arching growth patterns, providing an ideal canvas to showcase its beautiful flowers. The mature plant typically reaches a height of around 125 cm (4 feet) and spans 110 cm (3.5 feet) in width. But specific growth characteristics can vary based on growing conditions.

Foliage:
The mid-stem leaves consist of 5 large leaflets most often, each approximately 18 cm (7 inches) long and 14 cm (5.5 inches) wide. The foliage is abundant in quantity, the new foliage exhibits a dark brown green colour (Group 146A) with a dark brown purple margin (Group 183A), while the old foliage is dark brown green (Group 147A).

Leaflets:
The leaflets are oval in shape with a pointed apex, the leaflets have a glossy and smooth upper side. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single, and the petiole rachis is green with a slightly reddish tint. The petiole underside features 1-3 prickles per internode, and the stipules are long to medium, serrated, and approximately 2.5 -5.0 cm (1-2 inches) in length.

Wood:
New wood is reddish in colour with smooth bark, while old wood is brown and streaky with rough bark. Stems:

Prickles:
Prickles on the main canes from the base are ordinary in quantity, and the same applies to laterals from main canes. The form of the prickles is long to medium with a broad base, slightly hooked downward, and their colour when young is red. Prickles are evenly distributed around the stem.

Small prickles:
There are no small prickles on the main stalks or laterals.

Disease resistance:
The variety showed good resistance to mildew, blackspot under normal growing conditions. The resistance to rust and botrytis is excellent.
