Description
A very special variety with a very special name. Blooms with very large and full dusky crimson flowers which fade to crimson-purple or to cerise and even to mauve. Has an exceptionally pleasing and strong fragrance with Old rose character.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
The flowers of 'Othello' are notably large, surpassing most similar bush roses in size. They exhibit a deep, cup-shaped form, being very full and adorned with numerous petals. Due to its diversity, describing the exact color proves challenging; most frequently, it appears as a dark crimson that gradually transforms into crimson-purple. At times, lighter shades may emerge, particularly on the inner petals. Nevertheless, the overall color of the flowers is exceptionally beautiful. The petals possess a dense texture with rather wavy, notched edges, giving them a somewhat hardened appearance.
The aroma of 'Othello' is highly expressive, strong, and deep, reminiscent of old roses, making it a fitting complement to the flowers.
This variety demonstrates robust growth, quickly developing into a tall, upright, and dense bush. A mature plant can reach of up to 150 cm (4 ft) in heigh and extend as much in width. The stems are well-equipped with thick and sturdy prickles along their entire length. The leaves are attractive, enhancing the flower color, with a dark green, fairly dense, semi-glossy texture and distinct, deep veining.
Flowering all season long, in flushes and proves reliable, considering the substantial size and nature of the flowers.
The variety exhibits good health, showing resistance to botrytis and rust, with some susceptibility to black spot and powdery mildew, although not to a degree that raises serious concerns.
