Description
Simply iconic rose which already has become a classic, it actually started a new direction of so called ‘Nostalgic’ roses from Tantau. Her exquisite flowers suitable both for the garden and for cutting. The flowers are large, globular and first and cupped later, have a nice creamy white and cherry red colour. Aroma is moderate and sweet. It also forms very attractive plant with dense, abundant very dark green and very glossy foliage.
FLOWER
The variety has recurrent blooming habit, flowers in flushes from early summer until frosts.
Flower bud:
The flower bud is large and has pointed ovoid shape. When the sepals start to open the bud has dark cherry red colour. As the bud continues to open, the upper part of the petals are dark cherry red while the lower part is cream white.
The surface of the sepals is smooth, has medium green colour with purple red hues. There are 3 normally to heavily appendaged sepals and 2 unappendaged sepals with smooth edges.
The receptacle is funnel shaped, smooth, medium sized and has medium green colour.
Peduncle is very long, stiff and erect, and has red purple brown colour.
Bloom:
The flowers are large, the average open diameter is about 8 – 10 cm (3.5 - 4 inches). The flowers are mostly borne singly, or more rarely in small clusters of 3- 5 flowers per stem. The flowering stems are strong, long. When the flower first open it has globular flower form.
The colour of the upper sides of the outer petals is cherry red fading to lighter cherry red through pink to cream white closer to the base and the reverse sides of the outer petals have similar colour, slightly paler, with larger portion of cherry red on the petals. The most inner petals have cream white colour changing gradually towards cherry red on the edges of the petals. No variegations observed on its flowers.
Normally the colour of the flowers persists and no discoloration was observed in the first days of the flower’s life. The general tonality at the end of the first day as well as at the end of the third day is not changing. Also no change through ten days in the vase. There is some discolorations noticed closer to the end of the flowering, the cherry red colour fades slightly, the cream white shades turning pinkish, light cherry.
The flowers last for a very long time on a plant, about 10 – 14 days under normal growing conditions, and as a cut flower about 10 – 12 days.
Fragrance:
The aroma is medium, sweet and has tea character.
PLANT
‘Nostalgie’ belongs to a class Rosa hybrida and classified as a Hybrid Tea rose. The variety has very vigorous growth strength, it has upright and bushy, slightly outwardly growth habit. The mature and well established plant has a height of about 80 to 120 cm (2.6” to 3.9”), or even more, and spans of about 50 – 80 (1.6” to 2.6”) in diameter.
It’s resistance to diseases and to different climate challenges makes it a perfect rose for any garden, looks amazing in mass planting, rose beds, mix border together with other perennials,
Foliage:
The quantity of foliage on a plant is abundant. The number of leaves is 3 on average per 10 cm (3.9 inches) stem length, there is normally 5 leaflets on a normal mid-stem. The leaves are large, about 16 cm (6.5") long band 10.5 cm (4") wide. New foliage on the upper and lower sides is medium red-green, while the old foliage is dark green on the upper side and medium brown green on the lower side.
Petiole rachis is of medium green colour, about 8 cm (3.1 inches) long, the underside is rough and with prickles, about 3 prickles per internode.
The stipules are about 2.2 cm (0.9 inches) long, medium green and have smooth edges.
Leaflets:
The leaflets have pointed oval shape, the texture on the upper side is leathery and very glossy. Their edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and small. The length of the average leaflet is about 6 cm (2.4 inches) and the width is about 4cm (1.6 inches).
Wood:
The new wood has medium green colour with some purple red pigmentation, the bark is smooth. The old wood is medium green, the bark is smooth.
Prickles:
The number of prickles on main canes from base and on the lateral from main canes is about 13 per 10 cm (2.4 inches) stem length. They are relatively large, about 7 mm long and 10 mm in diameter at a base, slightly hoked down. The colour of the young prickles is purple red, the mature prickles have dark red purple brown colour.
Small prickles:
There are some small prickles on the main canes and on the laterals from the base, they have red purple colour when young and red purple brown colour when mature.
Disease resistance:
‘Nostalgie’ has excellent resistance to all main rose diseases, even in more humid climates. Pest resistance – not tested.
The variety also showed very good resistance to rain and heat.
