Description
‘Modern Art’ is a Nostalgic Hybrid Tea rose that combines refined quartered blooms in rich magenta‑pink tones, a delicate light fragrance, robust foliage with strong disease resistance, and abundant repeat flowering - an elegant and reliable choice for enthusiastic gardeners and floral art lovers alike.
FLOWERING
The flowering of the rose variety is repeated, it blooms in flushes with successive flushes from late spring until autumn. The timely deadheading encourages strong re‑blooming.
‘Modern Art’ presents very full, quartered blooms with over 100 petals and measuring to about 8 - 10 cm (3–4 in) in diameter, held high on elegant clusters that carry 1 - 5 flowers per stem. The flower form is cupped when the flowers start to open and as the flowers fully open the form becomes more flat, displaying a perfect quartered rosette strongly reminiscent of Old garden roses. The flowering stems are long and strong and are perfect for flower arrangements and vases.
The buds open from deep magenta shades, softening to pale pink at the petal edges, creating a canvas‑like bi‑tonal effect that delights through the season. As the flower ages the colours become lighter, pale pink but still the colour is deepening to the centre. The fragrance is light and gentle, offering subtle rose sweetness noticed up close.
Unlike many delicate Hybrid Teas, its on‑bush longevity is notable - the blooms remain handsome for many days on a plant, and when harvested they show an excellent vase life, meeting Tantau’s cut‑rose standards.
PLANT
The rose variety ‘Modern Art’ is classified as a Hybrid Tea rose and is a part of Nostalgic Hybrid Tea Rose collection from Tantau Roses. When fully established and mature rose ‘Modern Art’ reaches to about 70 - 120 cm (28 - 39 in) in height and of about 50 - 60 cm (20–24 in) in width, forming a neat, upright, bushy and rather compact plant.
There is a normal quantity of the foliage on the plants of this rose variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is normally 5, including the terminal leaflet. Foliage is glossy, dark green, and shows strong resistance to black spot and mildew - indicative quality of the modern Tantau breeding. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and medium.
It thrives in full sun with afternoon shade in hot climates to preserve bloom integrity and prevent a quick petal fading. The young stems and canes of this rose are healthy and green; prickles are moderate to sparse, easing handling both in garden and in floristics. When they are young, the stems and the foliage of the rose Modern Art' have reddish blush.
When pruning it is best to follow standard hybrid‑tea methods - early spring shaping, removing weak canes, and deadheading spent blooms to stimulate repeated flowering. Given its foliage resilience, integrated pest management should focus on sanitation and providing an airflow around the plants rather than routine spraying. The rose variety ‘Modern Art’ is ideal in mixed rose beds, tubs, looks beautiful as a small standard trees, or planted along in romantic borders; plant 5–6 per m² at 40–50 cm spacing to create massed effect. Blends well with silver‑foliage companion perennials which enhances its pink hues.
The rose variety ‘Modern Art' has good resistance to most common rose diseases, in particular it is resistant to mildew, blackspot and rust under normal growing conditions. The pest resistance has not been tested.
Rose variety is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
‘Modern Art’ / ‘TAN12639’ was bred by Rosen Tantau in 2012 and officially introduced in 2019 under the breeder code TAN12639, christened at the German Roselovers’ Society meeting in Heilbronn on 22 June 2019. Listed as a nostalgic hybrid‑tea spray rose, it was developed for both garden resilience and cut‑flower performance. It is protected under plant breeders' rights in the EU and other regions; US patent status is unclear. Parentage is not publicly disclosed. The introduction celebrated its visual similarity to Tantau’s award‑winning Chippendale, noting its compact, floriferous nature and cut‑rose production potential.
