Description
“Belle de Crécy” – an old Gallica rose (Gallica/Provins, Hybrid China), created at the beginning of the 1800s and now became a true classic! This charming rose, with a unique combination of cherry pink, grey, and lilac shades, gives it a soft, romantic appearance. The abundant blooming in early summer, with clusters of very full, fragrant flowers, provides a truly magnificent picture. The delicate form and the incredible vibrant color of the flowers of this rose on a low, spreading bush adds charm to any garden! One of the best Gallica roses with a strong, arching growth - its stems are also particularly smooth, with a small number of prickles, which makes it easier to maintain compared to many other roses.
Description
A small, spreading, wide (90–100 cm) and low (90–120 cm) plant with an upright growth habit, almost without prickles on stems and have abundant green foliage and well-formed, rich cherry-pink flower clusters. The flowers are highly fragrant, very full – double (41+ to 100 petals), medium-sized (3" or 7-8 cm) in rosette form, red-violet with a silvery button-eye in the center.\
The vibrant pink-violet colour slowly ages to a beautiful grey-lilac-violet. The petals are frilled and have a silver reverse, gradually fading to soft violet. It has the strong fragrance of an Old rose and pepper. The flowers tend to fade quickly and do not react well to rain. It blooms once, either in spring or summer.
The leaves are of medium size, rough, with a bluish tint, olive or grey-green in color. The bush is medium-sized, short, compact, upright, and sends out suckers, eventually rooting on its own. The canes are almost without prickles, with only a few small red prickles present. Pruning is done during dormancy and after blooming ends - remove old canes and dead or diseased wood.
Ideal for borders, flower beds, mix borders, and container growing.
The disease resistance is good. The winter hardiness is good as well, it is suitable for climates similar to zones USDA Zone 4b to 9a.
Name origin
Crécy is thought to be named for the Chateau de Crécy near Dreux, France, which was one of Mme. de Pompadour’s numerous homes.
Crécy is also the French word for “carrot”, a vegetable first grown as a cultivated crop near a town of that name.
