Description

‘Summer Gold' is a very bright rose, with vibrant yellow clusters of fragrant, fully double, cupped flowers. Forms bushy, strong shrub with quite thorny stems. Has dark green, very healthy pinnate and glossy leaves which complement well its golden flowers.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
The following description of ‘Summer Gold' / ‘POULreb’ was observed in its outdoor growth in a field nursery in Jackson County, Oregon over plants aged 18 months. Observations were conducted during August 1998 Color references are made using The Royal Horticultural Society London England Colouor Chart 1995 except where common terms of color are used.

FLOWER AND FLOWER BUD
Blooming habit - continuous.

Flower bud.
The flower bud has average size upon opening about 30 mm in length from base of receptacle to end of bud. Bud form is short and globular, the bud color as sepals start to unfold is light yellow (Group 4C) and medium yellow (Group 9C) when they are opened by a quarter.

The sepals are light green (Group 144B), have weak foliaceous append ages on three of the five sepals. The surfaces of sepals are moderately pubescent, stipitate glands are present in limited numbers on the outer surfaces of the sepal along the margins of the sepal and on the foliaceous appendages. Sepals are 20 to 25 mm long and 10 to 13 mm wide. The sepal's apex is cirrose in shape with a flat base.

Receptacle has smooth surface, they are funnel shaped, the size is small – about 8 mm in height and about 5 mm in width, colour is light green (Group 144C).

Peduncle’s surface with stipitate glands in limited numbers. Its length is about 120 to 170 mm, the colour is light green (Group 144C) with occasional anthocyanin coloration of brown red (Group 180C). They are strong, born with 1 - 6 buds per flowering stem.

Flower.
‘Summer Gold' / ‘POULreb’ has strong aroma with classic old rose scent.

Duration as a cut flower is about 3 to 5 days. On the plant the flowers lasts longer, approximately 5 to 10 days under normal conditions.

Petals fall cleanly away from plant.

The average flower diameter varies from 7 to 15 cm, in average 7 - 8 cm when open. The flower form is сupped. The shape of flower when viewed from the side upon opening: the upper part is flat to flattened convex; upon opening - lower part flat; open flower – the upper part is flat, and the lower part is concave. Flowers are very double, the average range 25 - 75 petals under normal conditions with 20 petaloids.

Color.
The occasional petal has a small red strip with the intonation of red pink (Group 51C).

Upon opening petals: the outermost petals upper surface are medium yellow (Group 7B) at base, light yellow (Group 9D) at tip, the reverse side is light yellow (Group 9C); innermost petals on the upper surface are light yellow (Group 9C), the reverse side is light yellow (Group 8C). The basal petal spots not observed on the flowers, as well as distinctive coloration at petal base.

After opening petals: the outermost petals on the upper surface are light yellow (Group 8C), the reverse side is light yellow (Group 8D); the innermost petals on the upper surface are medium yellow (Group 8B), the reverse side is light yellow (Group 8C).

General tonality of the open flower is medium yellow (Group 8B) No change in the general tonality at the end of the 3rd day was observed. Afterwards general tonality is light yellow (Group 8D).

Petals.
The petals are somewhat reflexed, have entire edges with some undulation. The shape is obovate with notched rounded and cuspidate apices. Petaloids number is about 20 to 25, they are about 7 to 10 mm long and 5 to 8 mm wide, the texture is smooth, thickness is average, and they are not formally arranged.

Reproductive organs.
Pollen has light brown colour (Group 167C), the quantity is scant.

Pistils quantity is about 25 to 30, they are about 8 to 10 mm long.

Anthers have size of 3 to 4 mm long, and light brown colour (Group 167D). Normal quantity is about 15 to 20.

The filament colour is medium yellow (Group 7A).

Stigmas inferior in location to anthers, light yellow (Group 12C) with intonations of red pink (Group 51C).

Styles have light green colour (Group 157C).

Note on coloration of the flower center: The overall intonation of the reproductive floral organs is primarily due to the numerous petaloids. The petaloids have a base color of medium yellow (Group 12B) with intonations of medium yellow orange (Group 15B) and medium yellow orange (Group 15C).

Hips - not observed.

PLANT
This rose variety has vigorous and bushy growth character. After two growing seasons when grown as a budded field grown plant on Rosa multiflora understock the average height of the plant itself is 100 - 120 cm and the average width is 90 cm.

Stems.
The young wood has light green colour (Group 145A). The older wood is light green (Group 144B).

Thorns incidence is 10 to 13 per 10 cm of stem; they have size about 8 to 12 mm. The colour of the immature thorns is medium yellow green (Group 151C), and on the older wood thorns are dark brown (Group 166A) and light brown 166D, their shape is deeply concave.

The surface of the young wood and the older wood is smooth.

Plant foliage
Normal number of leaflets on normal leaves in middle of the stem - 5 leaflets. Leaf size is large, 120 mm in length and about 90 mm wide. The quantity is abundant, the colour of the upper leaf surface is dark green (Group 137A), the lower leaf surface is medium brown green (Group 138A). Juvenile foliage is medium brown green (Group 137C). Anthocyanin intonation is absent.

Plant leaves and leaflets:
Stipules have size of about 15 mm 20 mm, they have light green colour (Group 144C). Presence of stipitate glands is very limited on upper and lower surfaces. Stipitate glands are located primarily on the margins.

Petiole length is about 25 mm, it has light green colour (Group 144C), has underneath prickles. Margins without stipitate hairs. Rachis colour is light green (Group 144D), has underneath prickles and margins with stipitate hairs on upper surface.

Leaflet edge is serrated, the shape is elliptic. The leaflet's apex is acuminate, the base is rounded. They are arranged in an odd pinnate formation. The leaflets are veined in a reticulate pattern. Texture of the upper side of a leaflet is moderately glossy, however the lower side of a leaflet is matte.

Disease resistance
Above average resistance to mildew, black spot and botrytis under normal growing conditions.

Winter hardiness
‘Summer Gold' /’ Poulreb’ has been found to be resistant to damage from cold in USDA Zone 8 and USDA Zone 7.

Thus variety is registered under several names Yellowstone (in Canada), Eurostar (Greece), Marselisborg (USA), Marselisborg Castle (USA), Schloss Neuschwanstein (Germany, Austria), Summergold, Summer Star. All those names refer to the same rose variety ‘Poulreb’.

Name origin

Parentage

This rose variety originated from a controlled crossing during the summer of 1988 between an unnamed seedling non patented and an unnamed seedling non patented. The two parents were crossed and the resulting seeds were planted in a controlled environment.

The new variety is named ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’.

The new rose may be distinguished from its seed parent an unnamed seedling by the following:

  • The seed parent is a grandiflora with yellow and red bi colored flowers while ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’ is a yellow floribunda.

The new variety may be distinguished from its pollen parent an unnamed seedling created by the same inventors by the following:

  • The pollen parent is a floribunda with amber yellow flowers while ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’ is a yellow floribunda.

The objective of the hybridization of this rose variety for garden use was to create a new and distinct variety with unique qualities such as:

  • Uniform and abundant flowers.

  • Vigorous compact growth.

  • Cold hardiness and disease resistance.

This combination of qualities is not present in previously available commercial cultivars of this type and distinguish ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’ from all other varieties.

As part of their rose development program L. Pernille Olesen and Mogens N. Olesen germinated the seeds from the aforementioned hybridization and conducted evaluations on the resulting seedlings in a controlled environment in Fredensborg, Denmark. ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’ was selected by the inventors in the spring of 1989 as a single plant from the progeny of the aforementioned hybridization.

Asexual reproduction of ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb by traditional budding was first done by L. Pernille and Mogens N. Olesen in their nursery in Fredensborg, Denmark in August 1989. This initial and other subsequent propagations conducted in controlled environments have demonstrated that the characteristics of ‘Summer Gold' / ‘Poulreb’ are true to type and are transmitted from one generation to the next.
