Description
This rose is an embodiment of both modern Hybrid Tea roses and the nostalgic charm of Old roses. Her captivating wine-red shades display a contemporary advantages and timeless appeal. The nostalgic flowers of this variety have moderate sweet fragrance od very complex shape of a cupped quartered rosette, the petals grow in a charmingly chaotic pattern, winding around each other in a beautiful display.
FLOWER
Despite its vintage appearance it blooms abundantly in flushes throughout the season, starting from late spring or early summer, and until the frosts.
Flower bud:
The flower bud is large, rounded and short. When the sepals first unfold, the bud color is dark purple red. When the bus is ¼ open, the upper surface of petals is medium purple red in middle zone with basal zone wine red and intonations of dark purple red in marginal zone. The buds appear in small clusters of 3 to 7 buds, having irregular shape.
The colour of the sepals on the upper surface and the lower surface is medium brown green with intonations of medium purple red. The sepals are large, have weak foliaceous appendages on 3 of the five sepals; the apex is apiculate and the base is flat at union with receptacle. The surface texture of the upper side of the sepals is very pubescent and the lower surface is moderately pubescent. The margins are very pubescent. There are few stipitate glands present on sepals.
Peduncle is long and very strong. The colour of the peduncle is medium brown green with intonations of dark brown purple.
Bloom:
The flowers are large, when fully open the average flower diameter is about 8 - 10 cm (3.5 - 4 inches) and the average flower height is about 6 cm (2.5 inches). They are very full and have cupped shape, when viewed from the side upon opening on the upper part and the lower part is flat. A fully opened flower has cupped quartered rosette shape with outer petals curl back.
Upon opening, the outermost petals on the outer side are wine red with intonations of red purple pink on marginal zone. Meanwhile the inner side of the outermost petals is medium purple red with intonations of red pink in marginal zone. The innermost petals on the outer side are medium wine red and dark purple red on the inner side.
After opening, the outermost petals on the outer side are dark red pink with intonations of pink, wine and purple; while the inner side of the outermost petals is lighter red pink with intonations of pink, wine and purple. The innermost petals on the outer side and on the inner side are dark red pink.
The general tonality of the open flowers is wine red. By the end of the 4th day the colours become lighter, more dark pink red. Afterwards, the general tonality becomes lighter, red pink.
On the plant the flowers last about 5 to 8 days. As a cut flower, 4-5 days. Senesced petals drop away cleanly.
Fragrance:
‘Marietta’ variety has moderate, sweet fragrance with Old rose character.
PLANT
The variety is classified as a Hybrid Tea rose, vas vigorous and strong growth habit. The plant forms upright, slightly outwardly bush. The mature and well-established plant has a height of about 70 to 130 cm (2.6” to 4.2”) and a width of about 50 to 80 cm (1.6” to 2.6”).
The rose will look stunning planted in a small groups, pots and tubs, mixed rose beds, scent gardens, Hybrid Tea beds, romantic gardens mixed with perennials.
Foliage:
The foliage is profuse and very decorative. The colour of the foliage is dark green, has smooth, lathery and glossy texture.
Disease resistance:
The variety ‘Marietta’ has very good resistance to rust, botrytis and mildew. The resistance to black spot is above average. Pest resistance – not tested.
Recommended for growing in a garden in climates zones USDA 6 and warmer.
