Description

"Maria Lisa" is a Climbing rose variety bred in 1925 by Augustinian monk Brother Alphonse Brümmer. It was later transferred, along with other varieties, to the European Rosarium in Sangerhausen for research. In 1936, the company Liebau introduced this variety to the market.

In early summer, a cascade of small (2-3 cm) semi-double (4-8 petals) fuchsia-pink flowers with a white center and golden stamens appears, emitting a faint fragrance. The blooms are extraordinarily abundant, forming clusters of twenty to sixty flowers that attract bees. In the fall, the plant produces numerous small, round coral-red rose hips.

As a Climbing rose, it can reach up to 4 meters (13.1 ft) in height when trained and directed onto trees, arches, or walls. The foliage is green, glossy, and very healthy. The bush is spreading, powerful, and vigorous, growing to a width of 200 cm (6.5 ft) and a height of 200 - 300 cm (6.5 - 9.8 ft). The canes are long, flexible, and nearly thornless. Although it blooms once per season, the display is so abundant, prolonged, and decorative that it has remained highly popular for nearly a century in Scandinavian countries, Germany, the United States, and Canada. It is also widely present in the United Kingdom and is very popular in other countries.

The variety is shade-tolerant, highly vigorous, and fast-growing. It is reasonably resistant to diseases and adverse weather conditions, requiring minimal care.

Cold Hardiness: (USDA Zone 6b–9b). However, this is a robust variety known for its cold resistance. With proper care and winter protection, it can withstand temperatures as low as -29°C (-20°F), making it suitable for Zone 5b.

Name origin

Franz Karl Brümmer (1874–1948) became an Augustinian monk under the name Brother Alphonse. He bred several climbing roses, which he gifted to the Rosarium in Sangerhausen. "Maria" and "Lisa" are the names of two women who worked at Brother Alphonse's monastery in Germershausen, Lower Saxony.
