Description
‘Konfetti’ is a bicolored Hybrid Tea rose introduced in 1991 by Hans Jürgen Evers of Rosen Tantau. Its gold yellow high-centered blooms with magenta-pink edges, fading to a gentle pink with age, create delicious and striking borders or bouquets.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
FLOWERING
The flowering habit of the rose variety ‘Konfetti’ is continuous, as this rose variety is suitable for cut flower production under greenhouse conditions. In greenhouse conditions, it is able to bloom all year round. In the garden it is able to bloom from early spring to frosts.
The blooms of this rose are medium-sized, the diameter of the open is about 6 - 8 cm (2.5 - 3 in) when fully open. The flowers are double, they have 30 petals on average, and the flower form is classical high-centered, the petals unfold slowly, flattening and forming an open cup towards the end of the flowering. They appear on the medium and sturdy flowering stems singly or in medium sized clusters from 2 to 11 blooms together. The flowering stems are medium sized, but strong and thick.
The flower of rose variety ‘Konfetti’ displays a striking, bright and delicious blend of golde, orange, yellow carmin and pink colour, creating a truly visual treat. They start as golden yellow with carmine pink edges, fading gradually to lighter yellow and pink tones, the thing carmine pink edges become wider as the petals age and turn more pink. Such a gradient effect looks like a pastel confetti swirl. The colour of the flowers may vary depending on the weather, becoming more intense golden orange with almost red edges in colder weather and having much lighter pink edges and softer yellow color in hot summers.
The petals of this rose variety usually hang on and dry, therefore timely deadheading not only keeps the plans neat but also healthy. The petals last on the plant for a long period, about 9 - 10 days on a plant and about 11 days when used as a cut flower.
Fragrance:
Like many of the early 1990-s Florists roses this rose has a rather mild but pleasant Tea fragrance.
PLANT
‘Konfetti’ is classified as a Hybrid Tea rose, and was mainly bred for cut roses production in greenhouse conditions, therefore is also regarded as Florists rose. The plants of this rose variety form upright, strong and rather outwardly plants, which vigorously produce numerous flowering stems all season long. The mature and well-established plants of this rose variety typically have 70 - 110 cm (2’3” - 3’6”) in height and about 40 - 60 cm (1’3” - 2’) in width.
There are very few prickles on the canes of the rose variety ‘Konfetti’, typical of modern Florists roses. Although the branches are strong and thick, when grown in garden conditions the branches may break out at the base when exposed to strong wind under the weight of the flowers, therefore it is recommended to grow this rose variety in protected from wind areas or to provide a support when large clusters appears on plants of this rose.
Foliage:
There is a normal quantity of foliage on the plants of this rose variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is generally 5, including the terminal leaflet. The leaves are medium sized, have medium to dark green colour, the surface of the foliage is glossy and leathery. The leaflets are broadly oval, with rounded base shape and cuspidate apex; the edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and medium sized.
Disease resistance:
Rose variety ‘Konfetti’ shows moderate resistance to mildew and black spot as for a Hybrid Tea rose in the garden; the disease resistance to botrytis and rust is good. Although it is generally disease resistant, particularly to mildew, blackspot and rust in greenhouse conditions, with an average day temperature maintained at 17.5 degrees C. No cultivar-specific disease issues are reported, but like most Hybrid Teas it benefits from some fungicide in wet climates.
In terms of winter hardiness the rose variety ‘Konfetti’ is moderately hardy, it is not well suited for cold winters, however it is recorded that it can withstand winter in the garden in climates similar to USDA 6 and warmer. It retains its health in damp continental climates, but in severe winter zones (≤–20 °C) some protection (mulch or dry cover) is prudent. Conversely, it tolerates heat well, at high temperature the color remains stable and does not fade easily, blooms maintain brightness even in summer heat and do not fade quickly.
Name origin
The name “Konfetti” is simply the German word for “confetti”, likely chosen to evoke the festive multicolor blooms. In English-speaking markets the cultivar has also appeared as Tantau’s Konfetti or Konfetti™.
Known synonyms include “Soleda”, which appears as a trade/registration name for Latin American markets (‘Soleda’ was used on labels in countries like Ecuador, Colombia and Guatemala as per Rosen-Tantau’s registers).
