Description
Groundcover Rose “Kastelruther Spatzen” is a wonderful small shrub rose with small, full, pure white flowers, whose petals acquire a pink tint in cold weather. The shape of the flowers changes during full bloom – from a slender cup in the semi-open stage to an elegant bowl and a beautiful rosette after full opening. During flowering, the small bushes are completely covered with white, double flowers with a pleasant violet fragrance, which beautifully contrast with the dark green, stiff, glossy foliage. Blooming continues from early June until October.
Description.
The rose “Kastelruther Spatzen” is a compact, small shrub that can reach a height of 40–60 cm and a width of 70–80 cm, with beautiful dark green, glossy, healthy foliage. It features a distinctly spreading, ground covering shrub form. The plants are low and well-branched, but do not sprawl extensively, typically occupying a diameter of 45 to 100 cm. The plants have robust canes that grow only to a height of 40–60 cm. The canes are prickly, with sturdy twigs covered in large prickles.
The summer foliage is firm, shiny dark green, pinnate, and arranged alternately. Each flowering stem typically bears 5 - 10 flowers. The plant is vigorous yet compact and during flowering is abundantly covered with snow-white blooms. The flowers are double, ranging from cup-shaped to rosette-like, varying from pure white in very dry weather to milky-white with a pinkish tint in humid conditions. They are 4–5 cm in diameter, exuding a light violet fragrance, and are gathered in small clusters. Some flowers are nostalgically quartered. In a cool summer, the flowers take on a pink hue.
Blooming is both abundant and prolonged, with changing nuances throughout the season from June to October. After flowering, the petals do not naturally fall off. The rose requires no special care and is disease-resistant. The ideal location is in a sunny or partially shaded area.
Disease resistance: resistant to black spot and mildew; the flowers withstand rain and heat well, though individual ones may sometimes be damaged.
Winter hardiness: good – hardy in climate zones similar to USDA Zone 6 and warmer.
“Kastelruther Spatzen” forms compact plants, making it an ideal choice for borders, rockeries, and container growing, whether planted on a pedestal or in small groups. This variety is perfect for small gardens, flower bed decoration, and patio courtyards. The shrub is low and neat, suitable for border, container, and mixed plantings, as well as small groups for decorating urban areas, terraces, graves, near churches and schools, and along walkways against the green backdrop of a lawn. It can also be used as a groundcover on slopes, in rockeries, or in stone gardens.
A variety that helps create the rose garden of dreams.
A low shrub with strong canes, it features shiny dark green foliage and delights continuously with new inflorescences from June to September. Its moderate, or lightly pronounced, violet scent is especially pleasant. Undemanding and easy to care for, it boasts high decorative value. The lush umbels, laden with numerous white double flowers, captivate not only rose enthusiasts but also visitors to gardens and parks. “Kastelruther Spatzen” effectively covers flower beds in both small and large gardens, creating beautiful transitions between vibrant communal areas and abundant flower borders. The narrow beds formed by this rose, which connect various sections in a large garden, look enchanting. “Kastelruther Spatzen” will be a wonderful and long-lasting embellishment around noble tea hybrid roses and colored floribundas.
With the groundcover rose “Kastelruther Spatzen” even plant lovers without their own garden can seize the opportunity to create the garden of their dreams, as this low-growing variety thrives in large planters and adorns patios and balconies. Its attractive appearance is complemented by a pleasant, light violet fragrance. Roses in containers require fresh, permeable, and nutrient-rich soil, and they need moisture - but waterlogging must be avoided. Fertilizer should be applied at regular intervals from April through the end of July. Compost, which provides regular nourishment, is a simple solution. A thin layer of mulch helps retain moisture in the soil.
While the best placement is in full sun, it also grows well in light partial shade. In harsher climates, it requires winter protection that covers the roots and the graft union area.
The rose “Kastelruther Spatzen” is a wonderful discovery for all rose enthusiasts!
