Rose Heidi Klum

This compact patio rose, reminiscent of the Hybrid Tea varieties, displays very compact and attractive bush with abundance of charming full violet-mauve blooms, about 6 – 8 cm in diameter. The semi-glossy foliage enhances the overall appeal of this rose.

FLOWERING
Blooms abundantly in flushes throughout the season, starting from summer and continues until the frosts.

Flower bud:
The flower bud is large, ovoid with a pointed tip. Before the sepals starts to open the bud colour is medium green with some purple-red intonation. When the sepals first unfold, the bud color is dark purple and the colour persists as the sepals start to unfold. There are some green white stripes present on a center of the most outer petals at this stage.

The colour of the sepals on the upper surface and the lower surface is medium green, margins are lightly pubescent. There are few to none stipitate glands present on sepals. There are 3 sepals with small extensions and 2 unappendaged sepals.

Peduncle is long and very strong.

Bloom:
The flowers are medium, with average open diameter is about 6 – 8 cm. Borne mostly singly, or in small clusters of 3 - 5 blooms having a regular shape.

When first open the flowers have cupped shape, which retains to the end and the most outer petals curl back. The flowers are full, many-petaled, the average number of petals is about 50 under normal growing conditions.

The upper sides of the petals upon opening have deep violet-mauve colour while the reverse sides of the petals have same colour with shades of lavender and gray. As the flower ages the petals colour becomes lighter, medium purple or lavender pink, the color is much lighter closer to the margins.

Flowers last on the plant for about 6 to 10 days and about 8 days as a cut flower.

Fragrance:
‘Heidi Klum’ variety has a strong and sweet scent.

PLANT
This rose variety is classified as Floribunda rose or Miniature / Patio rose because it’s compact growth habit. Forms upright, very compact plant. The mature and well-established plant has a height of 30 to 80 cm and the width of about 30 to 40 cm.

This makes this rose a very good choice for planting at the front of the rose borders, mixed borders, especially will great in pots and containers.

Foliage:
There is a dense and abundant quantity of foliage on rose ‘Heidi Klum’. The number of leaflets on a normal leaf in the middle of the flowering stem is 5. New foliage has medium brown green colour on the upper side and the medium brown green colour on the lower side. Old foliage has medium green colour on the upper side and on the lower side. The leaves have leathery and semi-glossy texture, the edges are serrated, type of serration – single.

Prickles:
There are few prickles on the main stems and few to none on the laterals.

Disease resistance:
The variety has moderate resistance to black spot and mildew, the resistance to botrytis and rust is very good. Pest resistance – not tested.

This rose variety was selected by the world-famous model Heidi Klum and named after her. Heidi Klum personally attended the presentation of this rose May 2005.

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
It is stated someplace that this rose variety originated from crossing the variety ‘Mackati’ / ‘Old Port’ a floribunda rose by Samuel Darragh, 1985 with the variety ‘Tanelorak’ / ‘Barkarole’, a hybrid tea rose by Hans Jürgen Evers , 1988. However, there are no documented evidence to this statement as of the date.
