Spanning 130 hectares of topographically diverse terrain along the historic Pechersk hills in Kyiv, the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden serves as a primary scientific sanctuary and the largest plant conservation center in Ukraine. The institution is internationally renowned for its pioneering ex-situ conservation programs and its legendary Rosarium, which houses a critically acclaimed national heritage collection of more than 650 unique rose cultivars and heritage species. Visiting information

The optimal period to experience the botanical garden is during late spring and summer.

The spectacular lilac bloom in the Syringarium peaks in May, while the Rose Garden opens to visitors from June through October, showcasing its primary flowering peak in June and a secondary flush in late August and September.

Visitors should note that the garden is built on the rolling, multi-level Pechersk hills, which offer breathtaking panoramas of the Dnipro River and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, but also require walking along sloped, paved pathways.

The greenhouse complex (which houses a remarkable collection of orchids, azaleas, and camellias) is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, with sanitary days on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Public transit offers the most reliable transit option: from the Pecherska metro station, visitors can take bus №62 or trolleybus №14 directly to the final "Botanical Garden" terminal.

Opening hours

 Operating hours are seasonally adjusted: from May to August, the grounds are open daily from 08:30 to 21:00.  During the peak lilac blooming period in May, operating hours are extended from 07:00 to 22:00.  From September to April, the garden remains open daily from 08:30 until dusk.  The Rose Garden within the park is generally open daily from 10:00 to 19:00 during its active season (June to October), though it may close slightly earlier (16:00 or 18:00) during scheduled cultural performances or maintenance.

History

  The conceptualization of the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden traces back to the autumn of 1918, coinciding with the historic establishment of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. However, complex socioeconomic challenges, administrative shifts, and geopolitical transitions delayed the initiation of physical construction until the autumn of 1935. Established on the historic Pechersk hills (historically known as the Zvirynets district), the garden's initial layout was designed to represent the diverse floristic zones of Eurasia, implementing a highly advanced botanical-geographical organizing principle. This ambitious spatial design sought to recreate the precise topography, soil conditions, and microclimates of regions ranging from the Carpathians and the Caucasus to Central Asia and the Far East, allowing for deep ecological research and ex-situ conservation.

  Following severe devastation and administrative disruption during World War II, a rigorous reconstruction and cataloging effort commenced immediately after the liberation of Kyiv in 1944. This vital restoration period was directed by the distinguished geneticist and academician Mykola Mykolaiovych Gryshko, who expanded the living collections and established the core scientific frameworks of the garden. In recognition of his foundational scientific and administrative contributions, the garden was officially named in his honor in 1964. During this mid-century period, famous landscape architect Dr. Leonid I. Rubtsov engineered several of the garden's iconic compositions, including the world-renowned Syringarium (Lilac Garden) on the southeastern slopes overlooking the historic Vydubychi Monastery and the Dnipro River.

  The design and material execution of the physical Rose Garden (Rosarium) began in 1948 under the guidance of the prominent academic architect Oleksandr V. Vlasov and architect Mykhailo V. Kholostenko. The pair designed a complex, multi-tiered park composition that fused formal and informal elements, leveraging the rugged Pechersk slopes to create distinct microclimatic zones for rose cultivation. Over the subsequent decades, the botanical garden solidified its standing as a premier European research facility.

  In 2006, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine formally recognized the historical, scientific, and cultural significance of the garden's primary monocultural collections - specifically the Rosarium, the Syringarium, and the Peony collection - by listing them in the State Register of Scientific Objects of National Heritage of Ukraine.

  The rose genetic collection conserved ex-situ at the M.M.   Architecturally, the physical Rosarium spans a vast 3.5-hectare plot (complemented by a 0.5-hectare nursery), designed as a complex park landscape. It is divided into a dynamic zone dedicated to comparative phenotypic studies of modern rose classes (including Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, Grandiflora, Polyantha, Miniature, and Groundcover cultivars) and a static, reflective zone anchored by a serene water basin framed by polished Ukrainian granite and weeping willows. The collection is notable for its substantial holding of historical pre-1867 heritage roses, including representatives of the Hybrid Perpetual, Gallica, Alba, Damask, Centifolia, and Moss classes, which provide essential insights into historical breeding pathways and morphological changes under temperate continental climates.

  From a scientific perspective, the collection serves as a primary laboratory for evaluating phenotypic stability, drought tolerance, winter hardiness, and resistance to prevalent fungal pathogens such as powdery mildew, black spot, and rust under Right-Bank Forest-Steppe conditions.
