Description

A dramatic bi-coloured Hybrid Tea discovered by Samuel McGredy IV in 1959 as a natural sport of the legendary ‘Peace’ rose. It quickly became popular for its crimson-red petals backed in butter-gold, large high-centred blooms and reliable repeat-flowering.

FLOWERING

‘Kronenbourg’ is very similar to its parent ’Peace’ / ‘Madame A. Meilland’ in build but swaps the pastel blend for dramatic bicolour flames. Temperature swings exaggerate the contrast: cool nights deepen the crimson, while hot days lighten the reverse to pale cream. For gardeners who love the classic form of Hybrid Teas but crave modern fireworks, ‘Kronenbourg’ delivers: show-bench-sized blooms, a reliably repeat habit, and that unforgettable crimson-over-gold palette - all wrapped in the romantic pedigree of ’Peace’ / ‘Madame A. Meilland’.

This rose variety has a recurrent flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with short breaks from summer until frosts.

The flower buds of rose ‘Kronenbourg’ / ‘Flaming Peace’ are long, slender, crimson-red on the upper surface and deep yellow-orange on the reverse side of the petals.

The flowers of this rose are very large, the average diameter of the open flower is about 12 - 15 cm (approx. 6 in). When just opening the flower shape is classical high-centered; and when they fully open the shape becomes more cupped with flat to, identical to the shape of its parent. The flowers are full, the number of petals under normal conditions varies from 45 to 50. They are born mostly singly, and rarely in small clusters of 2 - 3 flower buds per stem, on strong and upright flowering stems. The flowers are excellent for cutting.

The colour on the upper surface is rich crimson to claret while the reverse is pale yellow to straw-cream, giving a striking two-tone or “flame” effect. Hues intensify in cool weather and fade to salmon-pink/cream as blooms age. The fragrance of the rose variety ‘Kronenbourg’ / ‘Flaming Peace’ is light to moderate, with Fruity and Tea character, tends to intensify in early morning. The petals edges of this rose tend to crisp in extreme heat without even direct exposure to sun.

The petals of this rose variety have good self-cleaning quality. Under normal climate conditions the petals last long, on the plant as well as a cut flower they last for about 7 days.

PLANT

The rose variety ‘Kronenbourg’ / ‘Flaming Peace’ is classified as a Hybrid Tea rose. It has upright, bushy and rather outwardly growth habit, with strong, thick and well-branched canes. Mature and well-established plants have a height of about 80 to 150 cm and the width of about 50 - 100 cm.

There is a normal quantity of the foliage on the plants of this rose variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves varies from 5 to 7, including the terminal leaflet. The leaflets have an ovate shape with pointed apex, glossy and dark-green in texture. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and large.

There is a normal quantity of prickles present on the main canes from base and on the laterals from main canes. They are large, well-spaced and have a pyramidal shape with a broad base. There are no small prickles present on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes of this rose variety under normal growing conditions.

‘Kronenbourg’ / ‘Flaming Peace’ is a perfect choice for rose beds, or makes a striking and vivid cut-flower; its height suits mid-border positioning. It is best to give this rose variety a hard prune in late winter or early spring; remove spent blooms to promote rebloom. It will require at least 6 - 8 hours of full sun for best colour separation but at the same time avoid too much sun in regions with extreme heat.

The rose variety ‘Kronenbourg’ / ‘Flaming Peace’ has above average resistance to most common rose diseases, in particular it is resistant to mildew, blackspot, botrytis and rust under normal growing conditions .In colder and rainy regions is somewhat susceptible to black spot and mildew and may need fungicide sprays in humid zones. The pest resistance has not been tested yet.

Rose variety is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 and requires winter protection in more colder climates. It offers its best colour in warm climates, but not in extreme heat.
