Description
The Old Rose 'Fisher Holmes'’ is a remontant hybrid bred by Eugène Verdier in France in 1865. This expressive and fragrant historic variety is valued for its repeat flowering, rich coloration, and elegant shrub habit. It forms a medium-sized, somewhat sprawling bush adorned with large, deeply colored blooms in intense shades of carmine and crimson-red.
The buds are pointed and dark red to crimson, recalling the form of Hybrid Tea roses, though they open quickly into a more open, old-rose flower shape. The flowers are predominantly solitary, large, averaging to about 7 - 9 cm (approximately 2.8 - 3.5 inches) in diameter, and very double, with about 26 - 40 petals. They are open, cup-shaped, often scalloped in outline, with a distinct higher center and wavy petal edges. Coloration is deep and saturated - dark crimson-red with purplish and carmine tones - giving the blooms a dramatic and velvety appearance.
Flowering is profuse and recurrent throughout the season, making this variety particularly valuable among historic roses. The fragrance is moderate and pleasant, of Old rose character and with subtle fruity notes.
The plants of this rose variety are vigorous, medium-sized, and bushy, with a spreading, arching habit and mostly vertical growth. It typically reaches 120 - 150 cm (approximately 4 - 5 ft) in height and 90 - 100 cm (approximately 3 - 3.3 ft) in width, only rarely exceeding these dimensions. Branches are flexible, allowing the plant to be shaped effectively through bending and tying. The variety can be propagated by cuttings, layering, and suckers.
The foliage is composed of medium-sized, medium-green leaves, glossy to semi-glossy in texture, providing an attractive contrast to the dark flowers.
Frost resistance is good, suitable for climates similar to USDA Zone 4b and warmer.
Disease susceptibility: the variety is prone to powdery mildew, and therefore benefits from preventative care in susceptible climates.
'Fisher Holmes' is well suited for a variety of garden applications, including hedges, mixed borders, and landscape compositions. It also performs well in containers and is valued as a cut flower, where its richly colored blooms and classic form enhance floral bouquets.
