Description

‘Ferdi’ is a charming Japanese-bred shrub or groundcover rose combining a graceful, arching habit with a flush of coral‑salmon clustered blooms. With compact, bushy growth, strong shade tolerance, and excellent disease resistance, it is a low-maintenance yet attractive choice for borders, containers, or slopes. Though only blooming once per season, the floral impact is substantial, and its thoughtful breeding ensures ornamental hips and minimal pruning needs.

FLOWERING

Rose variety ‘Ferdi’ is a once-blooming cultivar, blooming primarily in late spring to early summer. The blooming is very profuse and prolonged, under normal growing conditions can last for about one month, becoming almost completely covered with flowers.

The flowers are small, the average diameter of the open flower is about 3 cm ( ~1.25″). The flowers have an open and almost flat shape, they are semi-double, the number of petals varies from 17 to 25 petals. They are beautifully presented in generous, large cone shaped clusters, having about 30 - 60 blooms per cluster.

The flowers upon opening demonstrate a btight salmon‑pink to coral‑pink tones with a yellow centre and almost completely cover the plant. They are very heat resistant. As the flower ages the colour becomes lighter, more dusty pink, and new opening flowers create a stunning visual contrast with older flowers creating colorful fountains of flowers. The flowers although have light to moderate pleasantly sweet floral fragrance attract a lot of polinators. If not deadheaded it forms small ornamental red-orange ovoid fruits (hips) which however are not for eating.

PLANT

Rose variety ‘Ferdi’ is classified as a Shrub rose or Groundcover rose with semi-pendulous (arching), bushy and very vigorous growth character. Its growth habit makes it also very suitable as a small climber and able to create stunning vertical visual effects. When allowed grow naturally it can reach of about 60 - 150 cm () tall, spreading to 90 - 185 cm (3’ - 7’). When trained as a climber can easily reach a height of about 200 cm (8’).

Its growth habit and vigour makes it suitable for use as a groundcover rose or it can be used to create dense informal hedges. The arching and slightly weeping canes of the rose variety ‘Ferdi’ make it suitable for use against walls or cascading over banks. Forms an abundant, salmon-pink floral display in clusters - excellent for softening structures or cascading over edges. It is suitable for creating low hedging, informal borders, city/courtyard gardens, can be used in container planting, cut flower sprays, or trained as a small climber.

Rose variety ‘Ferdi’ prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil, though tolerant of varied soils (chalk, loam, clay, sand) with moderate moisture. Thrives in full to partial sun, but it is noted to be shade tolerant, which makes it flexible in planting locations, however the blooming in this case will be less profuse. This rose variety needs minimal pruning - trim lightly to shape the plant or cut back after flowering.

There is a normal quantity of the foliage on the plants of this rose variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves is usually 7 with instances of 5, including the terminal leaflet. The foliage is small, semi-glossy, dark green and leathery. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and medium-sized. The new leaves and growth have intense purple red intonations.

There are ordinary prickles present on the main canes from base and on the laterals from main canes, the shape of the prickles is hooked downward and deep concave. The colour of the young prickles is medium green with tips of purple red; the mature prickles have brown gray colour. There are also quite many small prickles on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes of this rose variety and they are straight and have reddish colour.

Rose variety ‘Ferdi’ can be easily propagated via hardwood or softwood cuttings, and chip budding.

The disease resistance is strong to common rose diseases like black spot, rust and mildew. Typically it shows the vulnerability to aphids, sawflies, mites, but generally robust.

Rose variety is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 6 (in UK through Europe it corresponds to RHS zones H6, down to –20 °C) and requires winter protection in more colder climates.
