‘Eugenie’ displays delightful cupped rosettes of peach and apricot shaded flowers, paling to creamy to outer petals and later the colour fades to white. They have wonderful, spicy and strong fragrance with Myrrh character and aniseed notes and are held on long, strong flowering stems. The flowers open slowly, gradually changing shades and form and last amazingly long in vase - for about 11 days.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
Throughout this description of the rose variety 'Eugenie' is provided with color descriptions using terminology of the The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001), except where common terms of color definition are employed. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.
FLOWERING
This rose variety has a continuous flowering habit. This rose variety is suitable for cut flower production under greenhouse conditions. In greenhouse conditions, it is able to bloom all year round.
Flower bud:
The flower buds of 'Eugenie' rose variety are medium sized, about 3 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl. The bud form is pointed ovoid. When the sepals first divide, the bud color is medium brown purple (Group 186B) tinged with light yellow (Group 10C). When half open, the upper sides of the petals are white (Group N155D) and the lower sides of the petals are white (Group RHS 155C).
Calyx is star-shaped when fully opened with the sepals folding back, the length is about 9.5 cm and the diameter is 9.5 cm.
The sepals have a length of about 4.2 cm and a width of 1.0 cm. The shape of the sepals is lanceolate, the surface texture is slightly hairy or downy on the upper surface and smooth on the lower surface. The colour on the upper surface is light green (Group 144B) and on the lower surface is medium green (Group 143A) with veins of dark purple red (Group 60B). There are 3 lightly appendaged sepals with weak extensions and there are 2 unappendaged sepals with glandular edges.
The receptacle is medium green (Group 143C), pear shaped and has a smooth surface. The size of the receptacle is medium, about 1 cm long and about 1.3 cm in diameter.
The peduncle is short, averaging to about 7.5 cm in length, of a normal strength and has a prickly surface. The colour of the peduncle is light green (Group 151A) with dapples of dark purple red (Group 59A).
Bloom:
The flowers are very large, the average diameter of the open flower is about 12.5 cm. When first open, the flower form is cupped to flat, the flower form quickly becomes flat after the opening. Flowers are very full, the number of petals under normal conditions is 90. They are born mostly singly or in small clusters, of 2 - 4 blooms, having rounded shape. The flowering stem is strong, long, and has an average length of about 100 cm with a diameter of about 8 - 10 mm.
The colour of the upper sides of the petals is medium blue pink (Group 186D) and the reverse sides of the petals are white (Group N155D); and the base of the petals has light yellow green basal spot (Group 2C). Under normal growing conditions the variegation is not observed on the flowers of rose variety 'Eugenie'.
The general tonality at the end of the first day is medium blue pink (Group 186D), at the end of the third day the general tonality becomes much lighter, almost white (Group N155D).
Petals:
The texture of the petals is smooth and velvety, the surface is smooth, slightly rough; the shape of the petals is obovate; the margins are very weak in terms of incisions, with almost no notches or undulations, practically entire. The apex is rounded and the base of the petals is acute, and the petals form is slightly incurved. Average length of the petals is about 4.7 cm and the width is about 4.4 cm. The arrangement of the petals is irregular.
Normally there are few petaloids present in the center of the flowers, 6-7 on average. Petaloids have obovate shape with irregular margins, white colour (Group N155B), and they are about 1.5 mm long and 0.7 mm width.
The petals of this rose variety normally hang on and dry, therefore timely deadheading is required to keep the rose plant healthy and neat. Under normal climate conditions the petals last long, on the plant they last for about 11 days, as a cut flower their lastingness is also about 11 days.
Fragrance:
The fragrance of the rose 'Eugenie' is moderate to strong, spicy, with myrrh and aniseed notes.
Reproductive parts:
The number of stamens is 35 on average per flower, the length is about 13 mm, they are mixed with petaloids.
The anthers have a length of about 3 mm and medium yellow orange colour (Group 15B).
The colour of the filaments is medium yellow (Group 12B), their length is 9 mm on average.
The pollen is dark yellow (Group 15A) and scarce.
The number of pistils is 15 on average, they are about 5 mm long.
The colour of the styles is light yellow (Group 1D) and are about 3 - 4 mm long.
Stigma are about 1 mm long and have medium yellow green colour (Group 1B).
The hips of this rose variety have not been observed yet.
PLANT
The rose variety 'Eugenie' is classified as a Shrub rose. The variety is bred for cut flower production and is a part of David Austin’s Wedding and Event Roses collection. The growth character is vigorous, it matures rather quickly, 2 year old plants reach productivity. Mature and well-established plants have a height of about 100 - 120 cm cm and the width of about 50 - 60 cm cm.
Foliage:
There is a normal quantity of the foliage on the plants of this rose variety. The number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves varies from 5 with instances of 3 and 7, including the terminal leaflet. The average flowering stem has about 10 leaves. The foliage is large, about 17.5 cm long and about 13.5 cm wide.
The colour of the juvenile foliage on the upper side is medium green (Group 143A) edged with dark purple (Group 64A) while the lower side is dark purple red (Group 59B). The mature foliage on the upper side is dark grey green (Group N189A) and on the lower side is medium brown green (Group 138B).
Leaflets:
The leaflets are large, about 7 cm long and are about 5.3 cm wide. The shape of the leaflets is pointed oval, the shape of the leaflet tip is acuminate and the base shape is cordate. The surface texture of the leaflets is leathery, semi-glossy. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and small.
The petiole has medium brown green colour (Group 146D), is about 3 cm long and 0.5 mm in diameter, and has a glandular surface but remaining smooth.
The petiole rachis is dark brown green (Group 146B) and is rough on the underside.
The stipules are 2.5 cm long, have a glandular surface and dark brown green colour (Group 146A).
The veins have dark grey green colour (Group N189A), the venation pattern is reticulate.
Wood:
The new wood of this rose variety has light green colour (Group N144A) with a touch of dark purple red (Group 59A), the bark is smooth. The mature wood is medium green (Group 144A), the bark remains smooth.
Stems:
The mature stem has an average length of about 100 cm and the diameter of 8 - 10 mm, the internode distance is 12 cm. The stem pubescence is not present on the stems of this rose variety. The above measurements are all variable, depending on growing conditions in a season.
Prickles:
There are ordinary prickles present on the main canes from base and on the laterals from main canes, about 3 per 10 cm of the stem length. The shape of the prickles is hooked downward, the length is about 5 mm. The colour of the young prickles is brown red (Group 182C) with a hint of light brown green (Group 193A); the mature prickles have medium brown colour (Group 174B).
Small prickles:
There are few small prickles on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes of this rose variety, about 3 per 10 cm of the stem length. When they are young the colour is brown red (Group 182C) with a hint of light brown green (Group 193A) and the colour of the mature small prickles is medium brown (Group 174B).
Disease resistance:
The rose variety 'Eugenie' is disease resistant, particularly to powdery mildew (podosphaera pannosa) and to downy mildew (peronospora species) in greenhouse conditions, with on average day temperature maintained at 17.5 degrees C. The disease resistance to blackspot (diplocarpon rosae) and to rust (phragmidium tuberculatum) is not tested as those diseases are not prevalent in greenhouse conditions. The pest resistance has not been tested yet. In garden conditions rose variety 'Eugenie' is susceptible to most common rose diseases.
Rose variety is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 7 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
Rose variety ‘Ausimage’ / 'Eugenie' originated by David Austin by crossing two unnamed, unpatented seedlings of class Rosa hybrida.
BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY
The primary objective of this rose variety breeding was to create a new cut-flower rose variety having blush apricot colored, full blooms, which pale to cream on the outer petals, along with a good vase life and medium to strong fragrance.
SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY
The objective was achieved, along with other important improvements, and this rose variety incorporated the following unique combination of characteristics:
blush apricot to peach center colored flowers;
very full and very large blooms;
medium to strong myrrh fragrance;
strong stems.
Asexual reproduction of this variety by budding showed that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions came true to form, established and transmitted through the succeeding propagations.
COMPARISON WITH PARENTS
The ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ may be distinguished from its seed parent, by the following combination of characteristics:
the seed parent has a flower which is pink in color with smaller, cupped blooms and is taller in habit compared to blush apricot flowers and large blooms of ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’.
The ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ may be distinguished from its pollen parent by the following combination of characteristics:
the pollen parent has yellow colored blooms with extremely thorny growth and little to no fragrance compared to ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ which has different colored blooms with fewer thorns and a stronger fragrance.
COMPARISON WITH THE CLOSEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CULTIVAR
The most similar rose cultivars to the ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ are the ‘Ausboxer’ / ‘Keira’ and they may be distinguished by the following combination of characteristics:
The bloom size of ‘AUSboxer’ is approx. 9 cm in diameter, large, so smaller than that of ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ which is very large—12.5 cm;
The petal count for ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ is 90 petals, compared to 110 for ‘Ausboxer’ / ‘Keira’. There is a difference in the inner petal colour also - ‘Ausboxer’ / ‘Keira’ has petals of light blue pink (RHS Group 65B) with white (RHS Group 155D) whereas ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ is predominantly white (RHS Group 155B) for the inner petals;
The glossiness of the leaf blade can also be compared, with ‘Ausboxer’ / ‘Keira’ exhibiting a glossy finish, and ‘Ausimage’ / ‘Eugenie’ is less glossy.
