Description

Beginning as modest, creamy buds, ‘Effie’ gradually unfolds into a stunning bloom filled with rich amber, apricot, and zesty orange hues, all beautifully encircled by a delicate halo of pale cream petals. This rose captures both the warmth of summer and the luminous glow of autumn, enhanced further by a light Tea fragrance that perfectly complements its tender character. Taking three to four days to fully open, ‘Effie’ starts as a tight bud that slowly reveals a deep amber center. When fully open its inner petals burst open in a display of glorious sunshine tones, framed by a halo of soft ivory outer petals. The variety exhibits a vigorous growth habit, developing upright yet somewhat narrow plants.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY

Throughout this description of the rose variety 'Effie' is provided with color descriptions using terminology of the The Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society (2001), except where common terms of color definition are employed. Phenotypic expression may vary with environmental, cultural and climatic conditions, as well as differences in conditions of light and soil.

FLOWERING

This rose variety has a continuous flowering habit. Blooms in flushes with short breaks from summer until frosts. The number of blooms per plant during the growing season is profuse, but there are too many to count.

Flower bud:

The flower buds of 'Effie' rose variety are medium sized, about 3.2 cm long and 2.8 cm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl. The bud form is pointed ovoid. When the sepals first divide, the bud color is medium yellow orange (Group 21C). When half open, the upper sides of the petals are medium yellow orange (Group 22C) and the lower sides of the petals are medium yellow orange (Group 22C).

Calyx is star-shaped when fully opened with the sepals folding back, the length is about 9 cm and the diameter is 9 cm.

The sepals have a length of about 4.1 cm and a width of 0.9 cm. The shape of the sepals is lanceolate, the surface texture is smooth and slightly hairy on the upper surface and smooth on the lower surface. The colour on the upper surface is medium brown green (Group 191B) and on the lower surface is medium green (Group 143C). There are 3 lightly appendaged sepals with weak extensions and there are 2 unappendaged sepals with hairy edges at the margin which show some evidence of serrations towards the apex and tip edges.

The receptacle is medium green (Group 143B), pear shaped and has a hairy surface. The size of the receptacle is medium, about 1.2 cm long and about 1.3 cm in diameter.

The peduncle is short, averaging to about 8 cm in length and about 4 mm in diameter, strong and has a prickly surface. The colour of the peduncle is medium brown green (Group 146C).

Bloom:

The flowers are large, the average diameter of the open flower is about 9.75 cm and flower depth of about 4.0 to 4.5 cm. When first open, the flower form is cupped, the flower form persists until the end. Flowers are very full, the number of petals under normal conditions is 123. They are born singly or in small clusters having rounded shape, of 2-3 blooms. The flowering stem is strong, long, of an average length of about 90 cm and of about 6 mm in diameter.

When first open the colour of the upper sides and of the reverse sides of the petals is medium yellow orange (Group 11A) and the base of the petals has medium yellow basal spot (Group 5A) on both inner and outer side. Under normal growing conditions the variegation is not observed on the flowers of this rose variety.

The general tonality at the end of the first day is medium yellow orange (Group 21C), and at the end of the third day the general tonality becomes lighter, medium yellow orange (Group 13C).

Petals:

The texture of the petals is velvety and the surface is smooth; the shape of the petals is oval, the margins have very few notches or undulations, they are very little reflexing, with very slight signs of incisions. The apex is rounded and the base of the petals is acute, the tips slightly recurved. Average length of the petals is about 4.5 cm and the width is about 3.5 cm. The arrangement of the petals is informal.

Normally there are few petaloids present in the center of the flowers, 2-5 on average. Petaloids have medium yellow colour (Group 12A), they are about 1.4 mm long and 0.7 mm width, have oval shape and irregular margin.

The petals of this rose variety normally hang on and dry, therefore it is recommended to ensure timely deadheading to keep the plant tidy and healthy. Under normal climate conditions the petals last long, on the plant they last for about 11 days, and as a cut flower they last for about 12 days.

Fragrance:

The fragrance of the rose 'Effie' is slight, of a Tea character.

Reproductive parts:

The number of stamens is 10 on average per flower, the length is about 8 mm, and they are mixed with petaloids.

The anthers have a length of about 2 mm and medium yellow colour (Group 9A).

The colour of the filaments is medium yellow orange (Group 17C), their length is 4 mm on average.

The pollen is medium yellow orange (Group 21A) and the amount of pollen is scarce.

The number of pistils is 65 on average, they are about 10 mm long.

The colour of the styles is light yellow (Group 3D), they are about 7 mm long.

Stigma are about 3 mm long and have medium yellow colour (Group 12B).

The hips of this rose variety have not been observed yet.

PLANT

The rose variety 'Effie' is classified as a Shrub rose and is a part of David Austin’s Wedding and Event Roses collection. The growth character is vigorous, it forms upright and rather narrow. Mature and well-established plant has a height of about 90 cm and the width of about 65 cm. The variety is bred for cut flower production in a greenhouse environment therefore in garden conditions is susceptible to common rose diseases.

Foliage:

The foliage is abundant on the plants of rose variety 'Effie', the number of leaflets on normal mid-stem leaves varies is usually 5, sometimes 3 on the part of the stems closer to the flower bud, including the terminal leaflet. The average flowering stem has about 8 leaves. The foliage is large, is about 17 cm long and about 14.5 cm wide.

The colour of the juvenile foliage on the upper and on the lower side is dark purple red (Group 59A). The mature foliage on the upper side is dark green (Group 139A) and on the lower side is medium brown green (Group 137D).

Leaflets:

The leaflets are large, they are about 7 cm long and are about 4 cm in width. The shape of the leaflets is elliptic, the shape of the leaflet tip is acute and the base shape is rounded. The surface texture of the leaflets is leathery, semi-glossy. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and medium.

The petiole has medium brown green colour (Group 146C), is about 4.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter, and has a glandular surface texture.

The petiole rachis is medium brown green (Group 146C), has smooth surface with raised edges having a slightly glandular finish while the underside is with prickles.

The auricle is lanceolate, has a length of about 2 cm and about 1.5 mm wide. The colour of the auricle is medium brown green (Group 146C).

The stipules are 1 cm long, with an acuminate tip and with a broader base of about 0.2 cm narrowing to 0.1 cm towards the tip, have glandular surface and medium brown green colour (Group 146C).

The veins have dark green (Group 139A), the venation pattern is reticulate.

Wood:

The new wood of this rose variety has medium green colour (Group 143B) with some dark purple red (Group 60A), the bark is smooth. The mature wood is light green (Group 144B) and the bark remains smooth.

Stems:

The mature stem has an average length of about 90 cm and the diameter of 6 mm, the internode distance is 11 cm. The stem pubescence is not observed under normal growing conditions on the stems of this rose variety. The above measurements are all variable, depending on growing conditions in a season.

Prickles:

There are ordinary prickles present on the main canes and from base and on the laterals from main canes, about 5 - 6 per 10 cm of the stem length. The shape of the prickles is deep concave, the length is about 8 mm. The colour of the young prickles is light green (Group N144A) with tinge of medium purple red (Group 60D). The mature prickles have light green colour (Group N144A) with stronger presence of medium purple red (Group 60D).

Small prickles:

There are few small prickles present on the top third of the plant only on the canes of this rose, about 1 - 2 per 20 cm of the stem length. The small prickles have the same colour as the mature prickles.

Disease resistance:

The rose variety 'Effie' is disease resistant, particularly to powdery mildew (podosphaera pannosa) and to downy mildew (peronospora species) in greenhouse conditions, with on average day temperature maintained at 17.5 degrees C. The disease resistance to blackspot (diplocarpon rosae) and to rust (phragmidium tuberculatum) is not tested as those diseases are not prevalent in greenhouse conditions. The pest resistance has not been tested yet.

Rose variety is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 7 and requires winter protection in more colder climates.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY

Rose variety ‘Ausgray’ / 'Effie' originated by David Austin by crossing two unnamed, unpatented seedlings of class Rosa hybrida.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY

The primary objective of this rose variety breeding was to createa new cut-flower rose variety having yellow/apricot colored, double blooms in a cupped form with good vase life and a fresh tea fragrance.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY

The objective was achieved, along with other important improvements, and this rose variety incorporated the following unique combination of characteristics:

 apricot/yellow color rose;

 many petalled, very full bloom;

 strong stems and a tea fragrance.

Asexual reproduction of this variety by budding showed that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions came true to form, established and transmitted through the succeeding propagations.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS

The ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ may be distinguished from its seed parent, by the following combination of characteristics:

 the seed parent has a yellow rosette shaped flower with sprawling growth compared to the apricot/yellow color of the flower with more upright growth habit of ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’.

The ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ may be distinguished from its pollen parent by the following combination of characteristics:

 the pollen parent has a bloom with a deep pink color and deeply cupped flowers compared to the apricot/yellow color cupped blooms which open to a rosette formation of ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’.

COMPARISON WITH THE CLOSEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE CULTIVAR

The most similar rose cultivar to the ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ is the rose variety ‘Auslevity’ / ‘Beatrice’ and they may be distinguished by the following combination of characteristics:

 The bloom of ‘Auslevity’ / ‘Beatrice’ is a different shade of yellow (RHS 9C) when compared to ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ (RHS 11A). Also ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ has 123 petals per bloom, compared to 83 petals for ‘Auslevity’ / ‘Beatrice’;

 The fragrance type for ‘Auslevity’ / ‘Beatrice’ is Fruity, whereas for ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’ it is Tea;

  The mature prickle color between both varieties is also different light green (Group N144A) with tinge of medium purple red (Group 60D) for ‘Ausgray’ / ‘Effie’, compared to grey brown (Group 199D) for ‘Auslevity’ / ‘Beatrice’.
