Description

A timeless hybrid tea rose, ‘Black Magic’, captivated the attention of the global professional community with its enchanting appeal. This internationally acclaimed rose variety has received prestigious awards and is renowned for its exceptional qualities as a cut flower. ‘Black Magic’ displays a graceful growth pattern, featuring tall, upright stems and velvety dark-red flowers that unfurl slowly. This bushy rose variety also boasts glossy, dark-red foliage, enhancing its overall allure in the garden.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
The following is a detailed description with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with The Royal Horitcultural Society (London) Colour Chart, except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.

FLOWER
The variety has continuous blooming habit, flowers from early summer until frosts.

The purpose of this rose selection was to get a rose variety suitable for production of cut flowers in greenhouse environment. So, in controlled greenhouse environment this rose can produce 24 -26 stems per plant per year with long stems, glossy, powdery mildew resistant foliage and very dark, but bright red flowers.

Flower bud:
The flower buds are large, 3.3 cm (13/4 inches) long when the petals start to unfurl. The bud form is long, pointed ovoid. When the sepals first divide, the bud colour is dark purple red (Group 53A). As the bud continues to open, the upper sides of the petals are dark purple red (Group 46A) while the lower sides of the petals are dark purple red (Group 53A).

The surface of the sepals is covered in fine hairs, and has medium brown green colour (Group 138B). There are 3 normally to heavily appendaged sepals and 2 unappendaged sepals with hairy edges.

The receptacle is funnel shaped, smooth, medium, about 1.1 cm (7/16") long and 1 cm (3/8") wide. The colour of the receptacle is medium brown green (Group 137D).

Peduncle is very long, stiff and erect, from 10 to 11.5 cm (4 to 41/2") long, has glandular surface and medium green colour.

Bloom:
The flowers are large, the average open diameter is about 12-13 cm (4 inches). The flowers are mostly borne singly, or more rarely in small clusters of 3- 5 flowers per stem. The flowering stems are strong, long, about 66 to 76 cm (26"-30"). When flower first open it has high centered form, and it retains its form to the end.

The colour of the upper sides of the petals is dark purple red (Group 46A) and the reverse sides of the petals are dark purple red (Group 53A). The base of the petals is small, yellowish half-moon at the point of attachment, about 3 mm (1/8") long and 3 mm (1/8") wide. The major color on the upper side is dark purple red (Group 46A). No variegations is observed on its flowers.

Normally the colour of the flowers persists and no discoloration was observed. The general tonality at the end of the first day as well as at the end of the third day is not changing. Also no change through ten days in the vase. There is some discolorations noticed at the end of the twelve day, when petals collapse.

Petals:
The number of petals under normal conditions is about 30 per flower. They have thick texture, round shape and slightly recurved tips. The petals arrangement is imbricated with few petaloids in the center.

The petals drop off cleanly before drying. Under normal growing conditions they last on the plant about 6 -7 days, and about 10 -12 days as a cut flower.

Fragrance:
The fragrance is light to none.

Reproductive parts:
The anthers are large in size, many numbered, arranged regularly around the styles and are yellow in colour.

The filaments are red.

The pollen is golden yellow.

The styles have also red colour.

Stigmas are greenish white.

PLANT
This particular rose variety is classified as Hybrid tea rose. Has very vigorous, upright growth habit. The mature plant in a garden environment reaches between 70 to 150 cm in height, and about 70 – 90 in width. Will easily reach 210 cm (7 feet) tall by 120 cm (4 feet) wide in the greenhouse under traditional growing techniques in one year.

Foliage:
The number of leaflets on a normal mid-stem leaf is 5. The quantity of foliage on a plant is abundant. The leaves are large, about 17.8 cm (7") long band 12.7 cm (5") wide. New foliage on the upper and lower sides medium brown (Group 176A), while the old foliage is dark green (Group 139A) on the upper side and medium brown green (Group 139C) on the lower side. The leaflets have pointed oval shape, the texture on the upper side is leathery and glossy. Their edges are serrated, the type of serration is single and small.

Petiole rachis has green colour, the underside is rough and with prickles.

Stipules are long 1.9 cm (3/4"), serrated and bearded.

Wood:
New wood has light green colour, the bark is smooth. The old wood is medium green, the bark is smooth with some rough patches.

Prickles:
There is a normal quantity of prickles on main canes from base and on the lateral from main canes. The form of the prickles is hooked downward, they are about 1 cm (3/8") long and have red colour when young.

Small prickles:
The small prickles is not present on the main stalks and on the laterals.

Disease resistance:
The variety has good resistance to mildew, botrytis and rust under normal growing conditions. Has tendency to get infected with black spots, therefore it is recommended preventive measure against this disease. Pest resistance - not tested.

The variety proved to be quite hardy in gardens, its flowers especially well tolerate heat and rain.

Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
The variety ‘Tankalcig’ / ‘Black Magic’ was originated by Hans Jürgen Evers by crossing:

Seed parent - ‘Tanorelav’ / ‘Red Velvet’ by Hans Jürgen Evers, 1994.

Pollen parent – ‘Korlimit’ / ‘Cora Marie’ W. Kordes & Sons, 1986.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY
The primary objective of abovementioned breeding was to produce a new rose variety having the dark, glossy foliage; good cut flower production; and high petal count of the female, combined with the very long stems, low number of thorns, and bright red color of the male parent.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY
The objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the variety ‘Tankalcig’ / ‘Black Magic’ and that distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties: 1. Long, straight stems; 2. Clear, bright red flowers; 3. Glossy, dark green foliage; 4. Production of 24-26 stems per plant, per year under greenhouse conditions; 5. Good petal count for a cut rose (above 30); 6. Moderate thorn production.

Asexual reproduction of this variety by budding, as performed at Wasco, Calif., showed that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagation.
