Description
'Chianti' stands as a landmark in the history of English Roses and is the first red English Rose. It paved the way for generations of crimson-toned cultivars such as ‘The Knight’, ‘The Squire’, and ‘L.D. Braithwaite’ and later introductions. Embodies the romantic spirit of the Old Roses with the form and vigor of the modern shrub roses.
The blooms are large, semi-double rosettes, around 8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter, starting as rich crimson red and maturing to a dramatic maroon-purple, especially in cooler weather, bearing reminiscence with old Gallica roses. The petals form ruffled, lightly cupped flowers that flatten as they age, often revealing golden stamens in the centre. The fragrance of the flowers is a very powerful, sweet, with a prominent Old Rose character.
Flowers appear in clusters of 3 - 5 on long stems in early summer only, but the display is spectacular and memorable. After flowering, 'Chianti' often develops vermilion-red hips, which persist well into winter and provide further seasonal interest.
The shrub itself is tall, vigorous, and arching, with long, flexible canes that can be trained along low fences or allowed to spill naturally in large borders. Its matte, mid- to dark green foliage is attractive, though it can be prone to blackspot later in the season. The canes are lined with sharp prickles, adding to its rugged, wild beauty. When grown on its own roots, it does not sucker, but propagates easily from cuttings. A mature and well-established plant has a height of about 150 - 240 cm (4' 11" - 7' 10") and a width of about 150 - 240 cm (4' 11" - 7' 10").
Rose variety 'Chianti' is recommended for growing in climate conditions similar to USDA 5 and requires winter protection in more colder climates. Allow enough space for this rose and train branches horizontally for more lateral flowering. Good air circulation helps limit blackspot so proper pruning is very important for ensuring the good health of this rose.
'Chianti' is ideal for those who value fragrance, color richness, and an Old Rose aesthetic, particularly in large gardens or historical plantings where space is not an issue. It may not repeat flowers, but what it offers in its single summer bloom is truly remarkable, with a sheer abundance and color depth that rivals the finest Gallicas.
