Description

With very sweet and delicious caramel colour this rose combines the characteristics of modern and productive varieties with the charm and elegance of large flowered, multi-stemmed blooms of 'English Garden' roses. This variety has very good vase life.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
The following is a description of ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’, as observed growing plants of four years of age. Color references are made using The Royal Horticultural Society (London, England) Colour Chart, 2001 except where common terms of color are used.

FLOWERING
Has good repeating flowering, blooms in flushes from summer until frosts.

Flower bud:
The flower bud upon opening, is about 3.0 - 3.5 cm in length from base of receptacle to end of bud and about 2.3 – 2.6 cm diameter at its widest point. Bud form is short and globular. The colour of the bud color as the sepals first unfold is medium yellow green (Group 1B) with intonations of dark purple red (Group 60B). When ¼ open, the upper surface of petals is light yellow orange (Group 158A), and the lower surface is light yellow orange (Group 158B). Guard petals on the upper surface and on the lower surface is light green (Group 144B) with intonations of dark purple red (Group 60B) on both upper and lower surfaces.

The flower buds borne mostly several together, generally 3 to 5 flower buds per stem,.

The sepals are average 2.8 - 3.2 cm long and 1 - 1.2 cm wide. The shape of the sepals is generally subulate with the sepal’s apex having a generally cirrose shape and the base is flat at union with receptacle. There are few weak foliaceous appendages on 3 of the 5 sepals. The margins of the sepals have many stipitate glands on margins of sepals with foliaceous appendages. Stipitate glands are not observed on sepals without appendages. The surface texture of the sepals is pubescent, covered in fine white hairs; the outer surface is smooth. The colour of the upper surface and of the lower surface is medium green (Group 144A).

The surface of the receptacle is smooth, has light green colour (Group 144B), funnel shaped. The height of the receptacles is about 7-8 mm and the width is about 10-11 mm.

The peduncle surface is covered with stipitate glands, it is strong, has average length of about 5.5 - 7 cm and the diameter of about 4 - 5 mm on average. The colour of the peduncle is light green (Group 144B).

Bloom:
This is a large flowered garden rose. When open, the average flower diameter is 10 -12 cm and the average flower height is about 4 cm. The flowers have quartered rosette shape. The shape of flower when viewed from the side upon opening is flat on the upper part and concave on the lower part. The fully open flower on the upper part has flattened convex shape and on the lower part is concave.

Upon opening, the outermost petals on the outer side closer to the marginal zone have light yellow orange colour (Group 19C), in the middle zone they are medium yellow orange (Group 16C); the inner side of the outermost petals have light yellow orange colour (Group 19C) on the marginal zone, while the middle zone is medium yellow orange (Group 16C). The innermost petals on the outer side have medium yellow orange colour (Group 20B) and on the inner side they are medium yellow orange (Group 16B) with intonations of orange red (Group N34D).

The basal petal spot on the innermost petals from the outer side are medium yellow orange Group 13B and from the inner side are dark yellow (Group 13A).

After opening, the outermost petals on the outer side and on the inner side have light yellow orange colour (Group 159C). The innermost petals on the outer side and on the inner side are light yellow orange (Group 159B) with intonations of medium orange pink (Group 35C) on the inner side.

After opening, the basal petal spots on the outermost petals from the outer side have medium yellow colour (Group 9B) and on the inner side medium yellow (Group 9A). The colour of the basal petal spot on the innermost petals from the outer side is medium yellow (Group 3C) and medium yellow (Group 3B) from the inner side.

The general tonality of the just opened flower is light yellow orange (Group 20C). At the end of the 4rth day no change in the general tonality of the flower is observed. Afterwards, the general tonality appears of a light yellow orange colour (Group 159C).

Under normal growing conditions the flowers last on a plant about 4-6 days. As a cut flower they last for about 5 to 6 days. Senesced petals drop away cleanly.

Petals:
There are about 100-120 petals on the flower under normal conditions. The petals have a deltoid shape with pointed apex and acute base, they have silky texture and average thickness. The edge of the petals has a point in the center of the margin, petals reflect slightly. The length of the petals is about 4 – 5 cm and the width is about 3 - 3.5 cm. They are generally arranged in a regular pattern with overlapping edges.

There are about 20 - 25 per petaloids present per flower. Petaloids have rough texture and edges, with undulations on the margins. The shape of the petaloids is obovate, linear to elliptic. Parentage

ORIGIN OF THE VARIETY
The rose variety ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ originated from a controlled crossing in a breeding program of two distinct parents during the summer of 1997. The crossing was between following parent roses:

Seed parent - ‘Gold Glow’, a Hybrid Tea rose by Anthony Perry, 1959.

Pollen parent - an un-named seedling.

BACKGROUND OF THE VARIETY
The resulting seeds were planted during the following winter. The resulting seedlings were evaluated and exhibited distinctive physical and biological characteristics. The new rose plant was selected as a single plant from the seedling beds due to its superior characteristics and asexually propagated for further evaluation. This new and distinctive rose variety was ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’.

SUMMARY OF THE VARIETY
The objective of the hybridization for this rose was to create a new and distinct rose plant with unique qualities, such as:

• Uniform growth and flowering;

• Abundant attractive, recurrent flowers;

• Attractive and abundant foliage; and

• Resistance to diseases encountered in landscapes and gardens.

These objectives have been substantially achieved and in that distinguish ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ from all other varieties.

As part of a rose development program, Tim-Hermann Kordes germinated seeds from the aforementioned hybridization and conducted evaluations and observations on the resulting seedlings in a controlled environment in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany. The resulting seedlings exhibited distinctive physical and biological characteristics. The rose plant ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ was selected in May, 1998 from the seedling beds to be asexually propagated for further evaluation. The first asexual propagation of ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ was done by budding to seedling understocks in July, 1998 at the inventor's nursery in Offenseth-Sparrieshoop, Germany.

This initial and other subsequent propagations conducted in controlled environments demonstrate that ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ reproduces true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.

COMPARISON WITH PARENTS
The ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ rose plant may be distinguished from its seed parent, ‘Gold Glow’, by the following combination of characteristics:

The flower size of ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ is large, while the flower size of ‘Gold Glow’ is medium; and

the petal count of ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ is very double, while the petal count of ‘Gold Glow’ is semi-double.

‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ may be distinguished from its pollen parent, an un-named seedling, by the following combination of characteristics:

The growth habit of ‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ is upright, while the growth habit of the un-named seedling is bushy; and

‘KORtiglo’ / ‘Caramel Antike’ exhibits better disease resistance than the un-named seedling.
