Description
'Climbing Captain Christy' is one of the earliest climbing Tea roses, distinguished by its very large, lush, globular flowers and its elegant, vigorous climbing habit. The blooms are exceptionally decorative - soft pale flesh-pink in color, with a delicate luminosity and a visible cluster of golden stamens at the center. Combined with a rich, sweet fragrance, these qualities make this rose a striking and romantic presence in the garden.
This is a large and highly ornamental climbing rose, capable of reaching over 300 cm (9.84 ft) in height and approximately 200 cm (6.56 ft) in width. From mid-summer until October, or until the first frosts if regularly deadheaded, the tall, graceful bush is adorned with abundant flowers. The blooms are large, measuring to about 11 - 12 cm (4.33 - 4.72 in) in diameter, full, with more than 25 petals, and are colored a light, delicate pink, sometimes showing a subtle apricot tint. Their fragrance is rich, sweet, and prominent. Flowering is profuse and occurs in lush, repeated flushes throughout the entire season.
The plant of this rose variety display a typical climbing rose (“climber”) habit, reaching to about 245 - 455 cm (8' - 14' 9") in height and spreading of about 200 - 245 cm (6' 6" - 8') in width. It produces long, thick yet surprisingly flexible shoots, making it well suited for training on arches, pergolas, gazebos, columns, walls, and tall garden structures. Its growth habit allows it to be shaped easily hence providing a strong vertical presence.
The foliage is medium green, large, thin, and delicate in texture. Due to this foliage type, regular prophylactic disease treatments are recommended to maintain plant health and ornamental quality.
'Captain Christy Climbing' is winter-hardy in climates similar to USDA zones 6b to 9b. In more northern regions, winter protection is required. Like most roses, it prefers moderately heavy, moist, but well-drained, fertile soil. The rose can be grown in partial shade, including on northern-facing walls; however, it flowers more abundantly and remains healthier in a sunny, well-ventilated position.
This variety responds very well to attentive care. Regular watering, preventative treatments against diseases and pests, and consistent feeding throughout the growing season are essential for achieving the best flowering performance and maintaining the decorative appearance of the plant.
