Description
‘Buff Beauty’ is one of the most renowned and widely cultivated hybrid Musk roses (Moschata) of all time. Bred in 1939 in the United Kingdom, it remains the most popular and beloved Musk hybrid worldwide! This rose creates a stunning display as a large shrub adorned with clusters of honey-hued, double, fragrant blooms. The flowers showcase a remarkable display of shades ranging from orange, apricot-yellow, and soft honey to cream with a golden overlay and a darker center. In partial shade, cooler weather, and during the autumn, the rose's colors become more vibrant, with richer and warmer tones.
The blooms are double (45-50 petals), medium to large (7-10 cm), cup-shaped, and appear in lush clusters of 3-5 flowers. They emit an intense, perfume-like fragrance with hints of sweetness, fruit, and Tea roses. ‘Buff Beauty’ blooms generously throughout the season in long flushes, with a particularly abundant flowering in early autumn that lasts until the first frost.
The shrub is vigorous and strong-growing, reaching 120-350 cm in height and spreading 120-250 cm wide. It has balanced, arching, smooth canes that bend gracefully. Young shoots are reddish-brown. The foliage is strikingly beautiful, healthy, large, dark green, semi-glossy, and leathery, with young leaves displaying a reddish hue. This variety’s high disease resistance, low maintenance needs, and cold hardiness have won the hearts of many gardeners.
‘Buff Beauty’ looks stunning on pergolas, in mixed borders, or as a hedge. It can be trained as a climber, grown as a large shrub, or planted en masse, particularly in cooler climates. In warmer regions, it thrives against walls or supports and can even be used as a groundcover on slopes. It is considered one of the finest roses in its class. The recommended planting density is 2 plants per square meter.
Shade-tolerant like many Musk roses, it performs well in partial shade. It is also heat-tolerant and winter hardy, suitable for USDA zones 5b-10b, though spring frost protection is advised. ‘Buff Beauty’ can be grown in the ground or in a container (containers require winter protection). Pruning should be light or avoided altogether. The rose has high resistance to blackspot and powdery mildew, although occasionally, a thin white layer may form on flower buds in summer, disappearing once the blooms open.
