Description
A Classic Hybrid Tea rose with just a hint on Nostalgic roses. Combines dense and compact growth with eye-catching, very double flowers in a distinctive cupped ball shape. The flowers unfurling slowly, shaded in purple crimson colours, and emit a delicate fragrance reminiscent of Tea fragrance.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VARIETY
FLOWER
Has good repeating flowering, blooms in flushes from summer until frosts.
Flower bud:
The flower bud is large and rounded. When the sepals start to divide the bud colour is rich red with purple shades. When the bud half open the bud colour is crimson red. The flower buds appear in small cluster of 3 to 5 to 9 together, having irregular shape.
The sepals have medium green colour; the surface texture if smooth on the upper side and pubescent on the underside. There are 3 appendaged sepals with small extensions and 2 unappendaged sepals with smooth edges.
Bloom:
The flowers of ‘Ascot’ are fairly large, the diameter of the opened flower is about 10 - 12 cm (4 – 4.5 inches). They are very full and upon opening have a globular shape. The flowers usually open slowly, and the shape becomes more cupped, the very inner petals tucked together in the center, forming a ball.
When just opened the flowers have crimson red colour with purple-violet shades on the reverse side of the petals. As the flower opens the colour becomes paler, turning more medium violet and purple. The flowers last on a plant fairly long, about 5 – 6 days. However, in hotter weather the silky petals tend to get burned and dry out pretty quickly.
Fragrance:
The fragrance is very light to none, reminiscent of Tea fragrance.
PLANT
The variety has moderately vigorous and strong growth habit. Forms upright, compact, very dense and bushy plant with very thick and strong branches. The mature plant has a height of about 70 to 100 cm and the width of about 40 – 60 cm. In more warmer climates can be grown as a medium shrub or a small climber.
Foliage:
The variety has very dense and healthy foliage. The number of leaflets on a normal leaf in the middle of the stem is 5. The leaves are large, have medium green colour and semi-glossy texture. The edges are serrated, the type of serration is large and single.
Wood:
The young wood has medium green colour and smooth bark. The old wood is medium brown green and the bark is smooth with some rough patches.
Prickles:
The quantity of prickles is normal on the main canes and on the laterals from the main canes. The prickles are long and grow under a slight angle downwardly. The colour of the young prickles is medium brown purple, and the mature prickles are of a grayish brown colour.
Small prickles:
Usually, no small prickles observed on this variety.
Disease resistance:
The variety has good resistance to all main rose pathogens under normal growing conditions. In a colder and wetter climate has slight tendency to black spot and mildew. Pest resistance – not tested.
The variety ‘Ascot’ grows well in climates zones similar to USDA 7, in more colder climates requires winter protection.
