Description

Old rose ‘Arthur de Sansal’ has a very noble, rich color of crimson-purple, very full, fragrant flowers that adorn a compact, harmonious rose plant with beautiful, deep green, healthy foliage all summer. This rose favors a warm, dry climate. From summer to autumn produces large, densely filled with petals, full, highly fragrant flowers of a color between dark raspberry and reddish-purple with a pale reverse and raspberry inner petals aging to purple-violet. ‘Arthur de Sansal’ is very fragrant. Forms low and compact plants.

Description.

A low growing, compact, upright bush with beautiful, abundant foliage and somewhat scattered repeated blooming. The flowers are medium-sized 6 – 8 cm (2.75"), full (26–40 petals), and appear in small clusters. The flower shape is initially cupped and later flat, rosette, sometimes quartered rosette. Neat in shape, very full, dark raspberry-purple flowers have lighter shades on the back of the velvety petals. The flowers are arranged in a rosette, with a short peduncle, so that the flowers appear to sit directly on the leaves. They have a rich, fruity fragrance.

A compact rose about 90 cm in height, with upright growth, prickly stems, and a large amount of rich green foliage. Very freely blooming, which is repeated throughout the summer. The plant is compact 90 - 120 cm (3–4 feet) in height and of about the same 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) in width, upright, with prickly stems with pinnate light green leaves.

The leaves typically have 7 leaflets, ovate in shape, the edges are serrated, leathery texture and have medium green or light green color. Young leaves are red-brown, marbled, with red-brown reverses. Upright, stiff shoots with several medium-sized red thorns and a small number of small prickles.

Rose variety ‘Arthur de Sansal’ is excellent for pots and borders, in group plantings and mixed borders it can form a beautiful flower bed.

Requires watering during drought.

Disease resistance is average – requires preventive spraying with fungicides.

Frost resistance is good – USDA zone from 4b to 9b.

Name origin

Scipion Cochet was an amateur breeder from Brie. He named the rose after the amateur gardener and breeder Arthur de Sansal, who was a plant collector and an enthusiastic amateur breeder from Melun, south of Paris, France, and the son-in-law of Depre.

Robert Arthur Sanson de Sansal (1820, Paris—1874, Dammarie-lès-Lys or Farcy), a rose enthusiast-breeder, was the brother of Colonel de Sansal. On March 30, 1848, Arthur de Sansal married Caroline-Francine Desprez (1819, Maisons-Alfort - 1917, Paris), the daughter of breeder Jean Desprez.
