Description

“Ambroise Pare” is one of the finest and most widely cultivated Gallica roses, created in 1846 by Jean-Pierre Vibert. The shrub, which reaches a height of 2 m, is adorned with moderately sized, bright, double, fragrant flowers featuring a lilac-pink marble hue with lighter tones.

Fragrant flowers are gathered in small clusters. They are medium-sized (6–7 cm), very full, and round - pompon-like in the beginning of flowering, then unfolding into a more flattened, quartered rosette shape, sometimes with a small green “eye” or a subtle button at the center.

The color is vivid and varied: a violet-lilac-pink that becomes slightly lighter and more transparent towards the edges, often with stripes, variegated veins, or speckles in a lighter shade. It boasts a rich aroma reminiscent of spicy perfume. The blooming period is long and non-remontant (once-flowering), occurring in early summer.

The shrub grows to a height of 120 – 200 cm and a width of up to 90 cm. The canes are covered with numerous small and medium prickles and bristles. The medium-green foliage consists of five elongated, oval, pointed leaflets with small serrations. It is tolerant of partial shade and poor soils.

Frost resistance is very good - can be grown in climates similar to USDA Zones 4b to 8b.

Disease resistance is good, though preventive treatments against black spot are advisable in humid climates and against spider mites in dry conditions.

Name origin

Named in honor of Ambroise Paré (circa 1510 - 1590) a French surgeon considered a precursor of modern surgery. He served as the surgeon for the kings of France: Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III.
