In recent years, elegant old rose varieties have regained popularity. The Hybrid Perpetual group, which bridges the gap between elegant old roses and modern shrubs, is particularly noteworthy. These roses bloom for an extended period, repeat flowering well, and are highly fragrant. The rose “Alfred Colomb” belongs to the Hybrid Perpetual group. Its main advantage lies in its large, full, carmine-red flowers with a strong, rich fragrance that leaves no one indifferent.

Characteristics:
Rose “Alfred Colomb” is a Shrub (Modern Shrub) rose. The plant is vigorous, about 120-150 cm tall, and about 80-90 cm wide, compact, upright, with numerous strong shoots, either sparsely prickled or almost without prickles. Has a moderately vigorous growth character.
The foliage is large, has about 3 to 5 pinnate leaflets, is light green with a slight gloss, sharply oval with medium-large serrations; young leaves have a red edge.
Flowering lasts from June to October, it repeats flowering well.
After the flowering, the rare large orange hips shaped like urns with attached sepals may appear.
The flowers appear singly or in clusters of up to 3 flowers. Buds are rounded with slightly protruding sepals. Flowers are large, about 7 - 8 up to 9 - 11 cm in diameter, full (have about 40-45 petals), globular, well-formed, and carmine-red. The petals are dark pink at the base with a beautiful fiery red overlay, very sweetly scented, and rain-resistant.
The disease resistance above average: Black spot: 3+ and Powdery mildew: 3+. Winter hardiness is medium, it is recommended for climate zones similar to USDA zone 6b to 9b (−20.6°C); winters without cover in those climates.
Usage:
Ideal for landscaping, including solitary, group, and park plantings, as well as for cutting.
The Old rose ‘Alfred Colomb’ is a Hybrid Perpetual rose introduced in 1865 by breeder Francois Lacharme (France). It displays globular, full, dense flowers with an open spherical form, high center, and carmine-red color with carmine undertones. The petals are wavy and beautifully arranged. Flowers are large, 6 - 8 cm in diameter, with almost no discoloration and rain-tolerant. They appear singly or in small clusters of up to 3 blooms.
The fragrance is highly perfumed and strong, with sweet and rose oil notes. It is a healthy rose with excellent blooming throughout the season. In the garden, it can be used for both group and solitary plantings, and the flowers remain fresh for a long time in vases.
The bush is upright, reaching a height of 120-150 cm, with neat, erect growth, almost without prickles, and lush, rich green foliage. The foliage is highly disease-resistant. The sweetly scented, large, double flowers in deep, vibrant shades with wavy petals rebloom from summer to fall.
The rose ‘Alfred Colomb’ is an extraordinarily vibrant, richly colored variety with velvety strawberry-red flowers tinged with dark carmine and an incredibly sweet fragrance reminiscent of historical roses. The flowers are large and double, with 40 or more petals, spherical in shape, and about 9 cm in diameter. The petals are delicate, velvety, raspberry-colored with red undertones, and slightly wavy at the edges.

Name origin
