Description

‘Alden Biesen’ is a Musk hybrid rose that has an energetic and vigorous growth character, with a slightly upright habit. It can reach approximately 200 cm (7 feet) in height and 150 meters (5 feet) in width, depending on growing conditions. Its growth tends to be stronger in milder climates than in colder regions. Its flexible and prickly stems have a dark green foliage, with small, elongated leaflets that are slightly glossy and ruffled. The foliage is generally healthy.

Flowering and Fruits

Flowering begins in June and continues almost continuously until the first frosts. It forms long, large clusters of flowers, consisting of numerous small single flowers, of 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 inches) in diameter, which remain beautiful at all stages of its development. The flowers are pink with a white center and have a lighter reverse. Countless small flowers gathered in pyramidal clusters resemble those of panicle hydrangeas. Each flower displays the full range of rose pink colors, from candy pink to deep pink, before fading to a delightful light-green hue. In Ivo Pauwels' book, Louis Lens: De elegantie en de Roos, it is stated that the petals of this rose remain on the plant for months and become papery. The centers of the blooms attract bees and other pollinators. After pollination, oval-shaped hips form, turning orange-red by late summer and remaining very attractive even in winter.

Winter Hardiness

‘Alden Biesen’ proved to be a very hardy rose, even in colder regions.

Diseases and Pests

In late summer, the foliage of the rose often appears spotted or unattractive, however this does not hinder its development. These spots are a natural phenomenon and do not harm the rose. Aphids may also settle on young shoots, but their population is well-regulated even with biopesticides or using homemade ecological mixtures.

Planting

The rose should be planted in a sunny location with well-drained soil. ‘Alden Biesen’ thrives in fertile soil. Plant the rose among flowering hedges alongside other landscaping, Musk, or Old garden roses, lilacs, and panicle hydrangeas. It can also be paired with the easy-to-grow Clematis Viticella.

Care and Use in Landscape Design

Watering: Regular watering, especially during droughts is required.

Fertilization: Apply rose fertilizers several times during the vegetation season.

Pruning: Perform training pruning in spring and sanitary pruning throughout the season. If necessary, cut down very crowded branches in the center of the bush by removing crossing branches. Once the flowers fade, remove spent blooms to encourage the development of new buds. The growth of the rose hips does not prevent the forming of the new flower clusters, although in this case there will be fewer of the new flowers. The agening light-green flowers and later charming berries look very decorative as well.

Use in landscaping

Solitary Plantings: Looks stunning as a standalone plant.

Group Plantings: Can be used to create hedges or flower borders.

Cut Flowers: Suitable for cutting and use in bouquets.

‘Alden Biesen’ is not just a rose but a true masterpiece of rose breeding. It offers many advantages:

Unusual Appearance: Flowers start pink and then change color to green, creating a "preservation" effect.

Prolonged Blooming: Repeats flowering from June to October.

High Winter Hardiness: Endures winters well.

Disease Resistance: Moderately resistant to powdery mildew and blackspot.

Large Inflorescences: Flowers are gathered in large pyramidal clusters resembling hydrangeas.
