Description

The Old Bourbon rose 'Adam Messerich', bred by Peter Lambert in Germany in 1920, is a vigorous and expressive historic cultivar, valued for its large, fragrant, bright pink flowers and its abundant, repeat flowering. With its tall, arching habit, this rose can be grown both as a substantial shrub and as a small climbing rose, making it suitable for walls, supports, hedges, the back of mixed borders, and broader landscape compositions.

The flowers are large, measuring approximately 8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter, semi-double to double, and cup-shaped to globular in form. Blooms are borne mostly solitary or occasionally in small, slightly drooping clusters. At the beginning of flowering, the color is a bright, saturated pink, which gradually softens to a warmer, paler pink as the flowers mature. The fragrance is moderate, with pleasant fruity, raspberry-like notes.

Flowering is recurrent and generous, occurring in abundant flushes from June through October, providing a long season of color and interest.

The bush is large, upright, and spreading, reaching about 150 - 200 cm (5 - 6.6 ft) in height and about 120 - 150 cm (4 - 5 ft) in width. The branches are arching and flexible, and the foliage is bright green, enhancing the ornamental value of the plant. Growth is vigorous and healthy, and the plant responds well to attentive care.

'Adam Messerich' can be grown either as a free-standing shrub or trained as a small climber, where its long shoots can be guided along supports. It performs best in sunny positions and benefits from regular care to achieve optimal flowering and form.

Frost resistance is good, suitable for growing in climates similar to USDA Zones 5b - 10b.
